I’m on my third GS1200 now, first LC. It’s been reliable and handled everything I’ve thrown at it from high mileage touring, off road work pillion etc.
But have I become blinkered and brand loyal? With reports of the new 790 being the best thing since sliced bread and some 30kg lighter should I be looking elsewhere for my next bike.......
 
It’s not whether you should look elsewhere, but that you could look elsewhere....if you want to.

No such thing as brand loyalty, life is to short, get what makes you happy, and does what you want it to do, simple as. ;)
 
Lighter is good as you get older imho That's I'm a Yamaha fan boy now :D

I don’t think there’s many bikes are as good all round, be it town riding, commuting, motorway, trails, fun riding etc.

But, if you just do one or two types of riding, there’s plenty of choice.

I get that, I had a bad accident leaving me really weak and with limited mobility in one arm. I got an xchallenge to get me back on a bike then 2 701s. The later one I liked a lot but I always wanted another GS so when I had enough strength I got one and still have it but I do miss the lightness of the 701. Is the 790 noticeably lighter than my GS, only one way to find out I suppose.
 
I went lighter since we spoke at Linds, went for an XR ��
 
Best all rounder of all time IMO.. great bikes... just wish they'd make them like they used to do !!

I am not loyal to any brand .... whilst BM on first impression may give you a good experience at their dealerships with unlimited coffee, bar stools and a decent showroom, its the bike i'm interested in.

There are plenty of very good bikes out there so go and test ride stuff. I have banged on about this before (mostly to Engineer !), that regularly test riding other bikes is also very good for you. It keeps your bikers brain on point with all the variety out there from different suspension set ups, different geometry, different engine configurations ..... I certainly have a better understanding of 'bike stuff' for riding loads and loads of bikes, and the knock on effect is you can jump on pretty much anything and understand why and how it feels the way it does.

I don't doubt that a dealers location will have a huge influence on their customers, but if you're spoilt with most of the main manufacturers close to you (as I am), there is no reason not to pop in and take stuff out for an hour or so. (Thats why they have demo bikes ... they want you to take them out!).

I found the XR exciting, great everything except vibrations through the bars. The chain drive is a big turn off for me.

There’s no brand loyalty, possibly some to the dealers. I tried hard to buy my latest GS from CW in Dorchester as they have up until recently really looked after me, after one month and twenty days I gave up waiting for a quote and went to Dick Lovett who sorted me whilst I waited. I’d still try CW again.
 
As others have said , ride what suits your situation in the present time , not what others may recommend , good as the advice maybe . Its your riding time and that my friend should always be as close to perfect as you can get. For me at the moment the 1250 is my magic carpet , but that may change eventually ( hope not tho)

Now that is exactly how I enjoy new bikes on the market, turn up on a Gs, for sure you will get a test ride, and for sure I am still liking my GS more at the moment, but as age is creeping up a 790 is looking nice also, 30kgs less is easier to throw up on the stand and push around, and speed is really a non issue anymore far to many radars and kontrols. ;)
