Rotten cover restoration

I finally got round to respray my rotten front engine cover took out most the bolts (swapped them about to keep it in place during process) I attacked it with various wire drill bits then a big masking up job but looks good now new stainless bolts also done the bash plate looks soo nice in gloss black too

It might be a bit pitted but it's not too bad to need replacement I can't be arsed taking it all apart then spend a fortune to bmw sure I read their about £300

no point dropping oil to take it off I'm just tidying it up ready to use though the summer

Put some gasket goo under the plastic cover so it wont fret the paint away like it did with the original finish.

Mine is protected with ACF-50 which makes the corroded bare areas look dark grey but it's at least stopped the problem until I can get the cover powder coated.

Mine was like that but I guessed it'd be protected by the paint properly I'd love to repaint the whole engine black original finish not the best of quality.

I think BMW should have left the engine bare metal. At lest that can be cleaned whereas paint just gets pinholed and causes pits of corrosion.

Should have used hammerite smooth silver. Perfect match to the bmw finish.

Thought about that but I am going to spray wheels swingarm FD tank side panels all in black the silver gets dirty too quick least it will be easier to keep well also might confuse some as to which model it is too

I think you'll find the black even more of a bastard to keep clean than the silver, it shows everything.
Not to say you shouldn't have chosen black, I think it looks nice, but if you chose black because you think it's easier to clean and doesn't show the dirt as much you're mistaken.

I find the silver is a funny type of paint to keep clean had plenty of other bikes that never seemed to pick dust up so easy reason I'm going to respray parts I washed my XT600 after 3 weeks use inc been out in rain & it wasn't half as bad as wheels n swingarm on GS ?

Gloss black powder coat on my GS wheels look good. Certainly it shows dust but it cleans up nicely. Satin black on other bike parts wasn't so good for keeping clean looking.

Anyone had one of these changed under warranty recently?
My 2012 model is not looking too good in that area and is still < 2yrs old
I plan to ask them to have a look at the 18k service, just wondering
