Route 66

Just came across this thread. I live in Flagstaff and concur with many other comments. The bits of 66 I've had the opportunity to travel around here are interesting, but not sure I'd travel halfway around the world to do it. Having said that, its your dream and I'll happily serve as a resource to you or anyone with questions about AZ, southern Utah or southwestern Colorado.

Hi Dave, we are in LA at the moment, loking for any advice you may have on our choice of route - excursions etc.

We are planning Palm Springs to Flagstaff via Joshua Tree NP, finding a way North to Amboy then 66/I40 to Flagstaff. We are thinking of maybe stopping in Laughlin. Probably a couple of nights in Flagstaff with some day trips, probably to Meteor Crater before heading off to South Rim.

We have plenty of time to deviate from this and would really welcome any comments and ideas.

Thanks

Guy

Have you been reading my emails ?? :D
Doing a very similar route except we're going here after Joshua Tree & we're planning to do Grand Canyon Village before Flagstaff so we can do Canyon de Chelly. Can't wait :bounce1

Hey FlyGuy
Sorry - haven't been checking posts very often. Welcome to the Southwest. Not sure when you're going to roll into Flag - I'm out of town this weekend on a ride with some friends. But here are some suggestions for things to do in and around Flagstaff. Highly encourage a ride down 89A to Sedona with a stop at Slide Rock state park. It is an amazing ride. If you've got the time and inclination you can go all the way to Jerome...a cool old mining town that is now an artist center. Haunted Hamburger makes a good lunch stop. I'm not a big fan of Meteor Crater...with all the other things to see around here I personally don't see the attraction. For your Canyon ride we like to go up Hwy 89 to Cameron and then enter through the Parks east entrance. You get to see the Little Colorado River canyon, you miss the crowds at the main entrance, and there are some beautiful overlooks on the drive from the entrance to the Village. Once in the park, we find that you really appreciate the Canyon much more if you take a bit of a hike. Most people wander down the Bright Angel, but that trail is at the back of a side canyon. We always take people down the South Kaibab trail. 3/4 mile down and 800 vertical feet you come to some large boulders called Ooh-Aah point. It is a reasonable hike for just about anyone and you get amazing views and some perspective on the Canyon. While in Flag, the Beaver Street Brewery makes excellent unique pizzas with a nice selection of home brews. The Monte Vista hotel is a little pricey, but has a cool location right down town - there's usually quite a bit going on. When you get a chance, shoot me an email - be happy to answer any questions, offer more advice. If I'm around, love to meet up. [email protected] or [email protected]
Happy trails.
