Happy New Year all.

Clearly my first and the most likely New Year Resolution I will make is a bike trip. Planning to ride Rue Napoleon and returning via the Nurburgring. Assuming we stay in Cannes/Monaco/Nice area, could anyone recommend routes north to the Ring? equally, routes to avoid appreciated.

Here's my initial plan:
  • Day 1: UK->Reims
  • Day 2: Reims->Grenoble
  • Day 3: Rue Napoleon: Grenoble->La Mure->Corps->Gap->Sisteron->Digne->Castellane->St Vallier de Thiey->Grasse->Cannes
  • Day 4: Monaco->Great St Bernard Pass
  • Day 5: St Bernard Pass->Furka Pass->St Gothard Pass->Bernina Pass->Simplon Pass
  • Day 6: Simplon Pass->Nürburgring
  • Day 7: The Ring
  • Day 8: Home

Best wishes

Jeremy

Question one and it’s the usual one, in two parts: How long have you got set aside to go from Cannes to the ‘ring and when is this jaunt scheduled for?

Question two: Are we to assume that you have ridden to Cannes, by coming south on the Route Napoleon?

Question three: You want ‘routes north of the ‘ring’. To where? For days out? To go home? To go to the Baltic Coast?

Your turn now.

PS As a starter for 10, it’s about 680 (direct) miles from Cannes to the ‘ring. This explains the “How long have you got” question.

Here’s some basic ideas, comments and suggestions, to set your imagination’s juices flowing:

From the rough map above, maybe look at Route des Grande Alpes to Geneva. Then….. Dijon and on the N and D roads through Luxembourg to the ‘ring. Unless that is you want to ‘Do Switzerland’ and ‘Do the Black Forest’, before cutting across into Luxembourg and up to the ‘ring.

Or work on something around this, perhaps if you don’t want to ‘Do Switzerland’ and “Have done Route des Grande Alpes already, mate”.

Which is sort of a take on the Google map but running a bit further west. I quite like it but I like Provence and that whole corridor up to Dijon’ish and into Luxembourg.

Or you could cut towards Grenoble (you don’t need to that far) then skirt Lyon and up. That might well involve you taking in the current bikermate hit favourite of the:

without which no trip anywhere is complete:

As to ‘Routes to avoid’….. The UKGSer mantra always involves avoiding motorways, rip-off tolls and cities. What do YOU want to avoid?

Cheers Wapping, as follows:

Answer one: no set time period but I'd aim for approx 10days. Timing wise I would imagine May when the weather is more settled

Question two: Are we to assume that you have ridden to Cannes, by coming south on the Route Napoleon?
Answer two: Correct. I've ridden this before and would likely stay here again in Grenoble and do the N85 in a day.

Question three: You want ‘routes north of the ‘ring’. To where? For days out? To go home? To go to the Baltic Coast?
Answer three: I'd like to ride north from the Cannes/Nice/Monaco area towards the Ring ideally taking in the best Swiss passes. Then, following a day and a night at the Ring, I'd assumed we'd just make a dash for Calais to get the Eurotunnel back to the UK.

OK, thank you. Now we are starting to cook on gas.

10 days to get from Cannes to the ‘ring…. Via Switzerland…. Correct?

My apologies. 10days from England to Cannes to the Ring(via Switzerland) to home.

OK….. of those 10 days, front door to front door, have you used up getting from home to Cannes and then loitering in Cannes? Or, putting it another way:

How many days have you got available to ride:

Cannes to…

Switzerland (around lots of must do passes) to…..

Arrive at the ‘ring to spend a a full day and one night - one day gone - to……

Ride back to home, crossing Channel (you’ve suggested, I think that you’ll do this in one day) - another day gone

Three days to ride from Cannes to the Ring via the Swiss passes. Day at the Ring. Day to ride home.

OK, thanks….

I now see that you have edited your opening post, adding in the details of the days / destinations for yourself.

Here's my initial plan:
  • Day 1: UK->Reims
  • Day 2: Reims->Grenoble

Do you actually need anything, as the opening post now looks as if you’ve got it all cracked?
