Route Info needed - Hants to Humber bridge

OK all you seasoned travelers out there. I am trying to put a route together to take me from RAF Odiham in Hampshire to the Humber Bridge or more specifically Keyingham to the east of Hull.

I shall be doing this trip on friday afternoons and back again on Sunday evening so I looking for something to keep the boredom at bay

Has anybody got any recommendations. Criteria is avoid motorways and long Roman roads if possible. However, I do need to get home so I would like to go fairly directly and not via North wales ( no pun intended)

Looking on Autoroute, it all depends whether your aim is to get home, or get home after an enjoyable ride.

You don't appear to have a lot of options getting to the Humber bridge other than major roads or cart tracks. Seems to be between 230 and 270 miles.

All motorway is 260 and says 4 hours.

Mixture of all types ends up at 260 miles but 7 hours plus predicted journey time.

Shortest is 228 miles and 6 1/2 hours travelling time.

To be honest whenever I head north from Norfolk I always go via the Humber Bridge.
Unfortunately we have the A17 from other side of Kings Lynn then turn off onto the A16 to Boston B1183 To Horncastle .Left at the lights about 4 miles or so top of the hill a turning right Baumber 1225 what is called caistor tops one of the best biking roads for miles .At caistor you come to a staggered junction over that just after that maybe a mile or so ther's a left fork on a bend not shown on lots of maps it brings you out at the side of the Humber Airport .Turn left onto A18 few miles up the road think you come to a roundabout head for Humber Bridge .

I have trawled through www.bestbikingroads.com and strung a few roads together. Then I went on my Mapsource program and set a few waypoints to force the desired route and came up with this route.

Odiham to Reading - A33
Reading to Oxford - A4047
Oxford to Northampton - A43
Northampton to Market Harboorough - A508
Market H to Melton Mowbray - B6047
Melton M to Grantham - A607
Grantham to Newark - A1
Newark to Gainsborough A1133/A156
Gainsborough to Hull via Scunthorpe

The indicates recommended routes for fun and misbehaving.

Approx 230 mile door to door and should take about 4.30 hours.

So what do you reckon. Anyone done these roads? also where can I download speed camera co-ords so I can log them as well.

Newark to Gainsborough A1133/A156

I know that road well

Watch out for the hump back bridges, two of em on that stretch, There's also one level crossing, it's a skew crossing but it's not to bumpy.

The only fixed speed cam on that road is as you enter gainsborough, it's in a 40 limit, quite well hidden by trees and a sign(on the left). I can't remember there being any vans along that stretch.

Your not going up the a15 to the bridge are you? head through winterton. Its a good road if there's not much traffic

Just plotted your route on Microsoft autoroute which makes the mileage about the same but 5 hours 57 minutes. Friday afternoons & Sunday Evenings ( depending how late you leave it) are probably the worst times to travel, so I would expect it to take at least that amount of time. When I travel up to Leeds from Basingstoke I always leave until about 20:00 on the friday or 06:00 on the Saturday. Takes about four hours on the friday & just over three on the Sat. Thats straight up the A34/ M40/ A43/M1.

I wanted a route that provided a bit of interest and variety. I can't see me sat on the motorway on the GS all the way.

I plan on doing the trip every other weekend, leaving about lunchtime Friday and hopefully traveling back Sunday afternoon or even Monday if I can swing the time off.

The in betweeny weekends will be spent visiting my poor old Dad in Blandford, Dorset or catching up with bike meets/races etc
The wife is not to pleased but it will only be for 2 years tops.

If you can get away for lunch on friday you'll probably be ok. When we drive back from leeds we normally leave at @ 14:30 on the Sunday and usuall miss the worst of the traffic. Dunno what its like much after that. I guess on a bike it wont be as bad as in the car.

Why use the A33 when you can start at Hook on the A3349 takes you to the top of the A33 and nice road, to pik up the A4047 you will have to go through Reading if I remember right so add another hour to the journey
Can't offer anymore than that for now appart from other ways to Oxford.
let me know how you get on though as want a nice route to Durham for June and some of this would be good
