Another early stage planner for Norway June25. I have now established there are no ferries to Denmark from the UK any more - I recall there was a Harwich route about 20years ago…

Our Norway route will be a circular; Oslo, Kristiansand, Stavanger, Bergen, Trondheim, Oslo. Any starting point. As per page 59 of current issue (125) of Motorrad and Reisen mag.

Anyway, simple question/idea request:

- ride 850km to Kiel and take a 20hr ferry to Oslo or
- ride 400km extra (1250km total) to Danish north at Hirtshals and take a 2hr ferry to Kristiansand?

We can probably do Kiel in one go, but not Hirsthals, so door to door would likely work similarly. Mileage on bikes does not matter.

Has anyone done both? Any advice, much appreciated.

We did the Kiel-Oslo ferry last year. I crossed Hull-Rotterdam and rode to Hamburg to meet my lad who had ridden up from Chamonix. On the way back I could probably have caught the Rotterdam-Hull ferry the same day as we disembarked the Oslo-Kiel ferry but it would have to have been a clear run with no holdups.
The Kiel-Oslo ferry is great, more like a cruise ship. Having the night between the two ferries was in all probability not really needed but it certainly was less stressful than rushing from one boat to another.

I've done the Kiel - Oslo ferry several times, and also the different destinations from Hirtshals to Norway. Kiel is a 650km ride for me, Hirtshals 1000km.
Although the extra kilometers to Hirtshals looks easy, keep in mind that highway 7 has a lot of roadworks (and traffic-jams).
Alternative route using the Elbe-ferry at Gluckstad and avoiding the highway through northern Germany and Denmark takes more time,
last year on our trip to Hirsthals for the ferry to Iceland we took 2 days for this trip,
camping north of the Elbe on our way up, and south of the Elbe on our way home.
For a relaxed ride, I would recommend the Kiel - Oslo ferry.
If some extra kilometers is no problem, then Kiel-Gotheborg, or Puttgarden-Rodby + Helsingor-Helsingborg could be an option.

Following with interest as I’m at the planning stage too.

Out 15th May, back 3rd June.

Most likely using the Kiel / Oslo ferry rather than put the extra miles in - I’m old and will be 2 up.
