Route round Harris....Are the roads all passable or unmade tracks?

I do wish you lot would stop recommending to others to come and ride your noisy fast motorbikes in the glorious country of mine.

I've already been three times Cabby so I'm afraid it's a bit late... Your secret is out! :D

In all seriousness, as someone who flies all over the world for work it always surprises people when they ask "Where is the most beautiful place you've been?".. to which my answer is always Scotland. I absolutely love it...Gorgeous place (When it's not pi$$ing down obviously...).

Reminds me of the wizard of Oz that statement of yours...."there's no place like home" "there's no place like home" "there's no place like home"

Shame. The chap on the Africa Twin was looking forward to it....

I rode these islands on R1150RT and agree the west side beaches are a dream to view and walk on,very few people on it. Was lucky enough to enjoy 5 days riding in light gear due to sunny days which is remarkable for Scotland. Roads are small, twisty and not for speeding, just enjoy the scenery. Buy ferry ticket £55 ,which covers to and from Islands back to Ullapool from Stornaway staying over night at pub 200 yds from port. Enjoy

I'm sure you will find it is hill roads and not for bikes.

If you want to while away an afternoon, go up the west coast, stopping to look at Rodel Church, then on stopping for tea and biccies at the Skoon Art Cafe on your right, wend your way up and head back down the east coast towards Leverburgh, taking a detour to Luskentyre Beach on your way. The difference between the west coast road (Golden Road) and east coast road is remarkable.

If you are stuck for time I would miss out Stornoway...Lewis entirely in fact, with the exception of the Callanish Stones. Stornoway is just a harbour/town, and not a particularly attractive one at that.

This is bollocks. Go up the EAST coast(Golden Road), looking at Rodel, tea and cakies at Skoon, back down the WEST coast stopping to admire Luskentyre. Sorry. I'm a useless cnut.

However, be aware that the road up to Kilchoan is very pretty, very bendy and very slow...

We did a trip a few years back, and I remember one evening we were heading to Rogart. We'd had a long day, done quite a few miles and then hit that biking nirvana ! I can picture it now and its one of the most memorable bits of road I've done - sun was starting to set, stags looking down on us from a road side embankment and it was just ... it was heaven on earth! We all cruised along at about 30mph with tears in our eyes!! One of those weird and wacky moments in life ... !!

Great suggestion Gerard. We've done the Klyerhea ferry twice and the A87 (What a road... :D) to the Spean Bridge so were looking for a different route. I've replanned via the Kilchoan ferry to Tobermory just to shorten the track mileage a bit, and the run to Kilchoan looks beautiful.

I've planned in a stop at Castle Tioram and Castle Duart just to ram some culture into the heathen bunch I'm going away with :D

Any good cafe / coffee stops enroute that anybody particularly recommends? [Latest route ]

Bear in mind that once off the Mallaig road, the roads into Ardnamurchan may be categorised A roads but are still single track until quite close to the Corran Ferry. Plan accordingly! Gerry's suggestion re going over Mam Ratagan may save you a bit of time. There's not a lot at Castle Tioram. Owned by an absentee Yank I believe and in a poor state of repair last time I was there. You could get in at low tide, with a bit of gymnastics at the door to the castle. In your shoes, I'd be tempted to spend the time on a trip out to Iona and back.

The best thing about Stornaway is the ferry back to Ullapool.

There is a good Café-Bar called HS-1 where the food is nice, it's open on a Sunday too.....;)

The outer isles can do that to you. Just can't guarantee it which is probably a good part of the reason. At their best, one of the top spots anywhere, so worth the risk. Go and try. Enjoy, there's always a wee dram to warm you up.
