I'm after a little advice.
Me and a couple of mates are looking at the dolomites for this years tour.
8 days - day 1, tunnel and stoping in Chalons, Day 2 heading to Frieburg and booked a hotel in Totdmoos.
the help required are good routes from the Freiburg area to Cortina(anywhere else you guys recommend?) with a hotel stop in between
We ventured into Italy last year but the route I took north of Lake Konstanz was a busy and little to no fun.

also ideas on options on way back to the tunnel would be appreciated.

thanks guys in advance.

Paul.

your routing seems counter intuitive to me

do you mean Chalons on Champagne? If so, why are you going as far south as Todtmoos (a lovely place but off piste for your trip)? I would head east towards Tuttlingen and then stay away from the dreadful B31 alongside Lake Constance. Head further east via Ravensburg and Kempten, to enter Austria over the Fernpass.
Depending on your timings, take the Timmelsjoch pass for scenery or the Brenner pass for haste to get into Italy.

That’s the way I always go👍

The ride along the river Donau is a nice interruption too

Me too and then onto the Jaufen pass. If time is pressing then once in the valley floor about 15 miles of motorway gets you to the Dolomites "entrance".

Fernpass is a bit slow, not a classic due to the amount of traffic on it, and after Imst there is a short stretch of motorway, which a Garmin XT or XT2 will try and route you along), for which you should have a vignette, or a perfectly acceptable road (the B171) that's free.

There’s now two threads, asking pretty much the same thing. I guess the answer to both could well be similar.

Yes, no great fan of the Fernpass. I would spend more time going via Stanzach and the Hahntenjoch to get to Imst. Not everyone can ride that though due to the 95dB noise limit and th etime it takes.

it is Chalons en Champagne for the 1st night.
thanks for all of your responses and I agree the route is counterintuitive.
the thought behind heading towards Todtmoos was based on last years tour- Baden- Baden and Freiburg for a few days, skirting Austria, picking up the Stelvio and lake Como, heading back through Thun Switzerland, and back home though southern Voges starting at Cernay.

this year tour-
there is a new guy with us who wants to have a good run around the Black Forest before heading to Italy.
from feedback the rest of us preferred the south west of Freiburg area as the roads were quieter so I though I'd kill 2 birds -from Chalons, through southern Vosges into Germany have an afternoon around Munstertal - Todtmoos
spending the following morning around that area but gradually heading east and at Wessie recommendation and following his rough route ... Tuttlingen, Ravensburg, Kempten looking at accommodation around Stanzach before going over the Timmelsjoch into Italy.

am I mad?
-
still got to find a way back

thanks for you help and all advice welcome.

.. I can't believe I still get excited about riding my bike.

Paul.

The roads around Stanzach are great but beware of the noise limit in that area. Any Boxer twin is okay but a S1000XR is over the 95dB limit. My V85 is fine.
In busy periods they have checks and the fines are steep if non-compliant. They will want to see your V5 that has static noise listed, section U1, I think. Check and use the Fernpass if over the limit.

Wow, I didn’t know about the noise restriction areas. I do like it though. It’ll really piss off the loud exhaust types too so double bonus. 95db is 19db above the legal requirement for ear defenders. So any pedestrian would be required to wear them if they’re at work.

there are shit loads of them in Germany, Austria and Switzerland
some are noise limits, some ban bikes on weekends, some are total bans, some lower speed limits

if @v60miller is riding around Todtmoos on a weekend, then there are some roads on that map with weekend restrictions including the fabulous Schauinsland

Thanks, I’m pretty sure the local decision makers have reasons for the restrictions. Motorcyclists in many cases do not help themselves. Loud exhausts, dangerous overtakes, wheelies in inappropriate situations among many other things that just piss off other road users.

indeed, their roads, their rules

it just meant I had to go to that part of the world on my R1200RS not the S1000XR (2016 version, no idea if the later versions are compliant)

Repeat reply of mine from other Dolly thread.

Myself and @Stevie4scoops did a Dolly trip last autumn, 9 days - D1 out via Chunnel to Bitburg(DE), D2 to Colmar(FR), D3 to Oberamagau(DE), D4 to Arabba(IT), D5 local ridingArabba(IT), D6 to Dornbirn (AT), D7 to Nancy(FR), D8 to Rouen(FR), D9 to Caen/Portsmouth, home.

We barely touched motorways, real variety of places going there and coming back and loved a couple of days there. I have each day in MRA - happy to share if needed.
