Thermarest turned up today. Marked as a gift of $25 dollar value. The company also put "Happy Birthday!!" on the packing which made me chuckle.

Overall, no import duties, nothing.............just the Thermarest :)

My 2p

I like to live well below my means!

After reading Chris Scott's Adventure Motorcycling Handbook I went out & bought a plastic (so it won't dent & loose it's seal) bicycle hand pump from Argos for £2.99 inc VAT :D

No delivery charges, no customs charges. :thumb2

It's small enough to store in a pannier & not notice it.

OK, if I do get a puncture I'll be pumping for ages & have an arm like Popeye but I pack CO2 bulbs as well & I've never had a puncture while touring 'yet' so I like the odds.

Just got myself a mini tyre pump off the net that I have spent ages looking for. Spent ages looking at ones that were far too big and heavy and then eventually found one at www.motopumps.com
Tiny little thing that weighs next too nothing. Problem was it had to come from the states. $9 in postage. Not that bad considering.

Until the Royal mail went and added £11.57 in customs fees. £3.57 for the vat (even that seemed high for a £20 itm - allowed £18 so vat on £2? And £8 handling charge for putting a sticker on the front of the envelope! The sooner email puts them out of business the better.

The pump works a treat though. Just cost nearly twice as much with the postage.

Oh winge winge winge, :thedummy

You tried to beat the system by buying abroad and got caught out, as has been stated the charges are collected by the Royal Mail not controlled by them. £8 for the work involved seems reasonable. They may not be perfect but I think that the Royal Mail for the most part do a good job for a reasonable price. Can't even begin to imagine what a private company who had the monopoly on the import would charge....

If you're happy with the pump then just grin and bare it :Motomartin

Interesting comment Wrong, but interesting all the same, when you pay shipping in any country the shipping agent has to pay a delivery charge to the local agent eg: royal mail for the local half of the delivery, charging a handling fee & withholding until that fee is paid, actually falls under the heading of fraud, as they have already been paid for the delivery.......:mcgun

I've actually seen this comment raised on crimewatch as well, you can call the police if they refuse the give you whats yours :D

If you're going to try and be a smartass your should really read the posts properly, the fee we are talking about is the HMCI dues, not the delivery charge due to the Royal Mail.:Motomartin

I did sunshine & if you bother to deal direct you'll find the charge will be much less as they will apply it correctly .....then what would I know I've only been in federal law enforcement for 7 years

International Post doesn't work on the same principles as international freight. HM Customs and Excise acted completely within both their rights and the law in this case, as did the Royal Mail. The recipient of an item from overseas on which customs and handling charges have been levied can either A) Like it or B) Lump it. Fraud, agents and federal law (:nenau ) do not enter the equation.

Doh'hh Read through again please !!!!:rob
It's the exorbitant charge the Royal mail make for collecting said Customs duty owed
EG I owed £3.50p Customs duty, royal Mail :spitfire :spitfire charged ME £8.50 to collect the £3.50 before letting me have my package:spitfire :spitfire :spitfire

Harmonization codes are where it is at.
I import from the states.....The codes are all important.
A whole consignment will go with the product that has the highest harmonisation code.
A product that I import has a very high harmonization code that is tax free:D
Everything else in that consignement is tax free.
You still have to pay the VAT, but no duty.

If I tell you , I would have to kill you.....It is a loophole, I know this because I have checked it out with HMCE.:thumb

Suckers.......:P

yeah was well pissed off when i got one of these an item is at the local office for you notices, so went to pick it up the guy tells me there's insufficient postage on it it'll cost me the 17p short and £1-00 charges, so there's me thinking what's my wife ordered now, some stupid beauty magazine or something. Handed over the £1-17 got the envelope went outside opened it to find junk mail, so in came the red mist:spitfire ...............Poor post office worker probably didn't deserve that i thought later....... until i found out that Royail mail were the handlers for the company........lots more red mist:spitfire ......few blood pressure tablets but at least i got me quid seventeen back and it only cost £1-50 in phone calls............ Ahhhh1 I got them back!!!!!!!!:blast

Interesting theory
as HM cutoms and inland revenue are the same office, then i should be able to get the police involved with income tax issues, who will force them to give me my money back.
That would be fun
Seriously, as a previous reply mentioned ,harmomised codes for importing or exporting anything anywhere in the world determine the amount of Duty payable in the destination country, this is normaly accompanied by a commercial invoice which gives a description, and cost of the goods.
Its nothing new, its protects our 'treasure island' status, thats partly why identical items cost up to 50 % more in the UK
