Ladies, gentlemen, traders and private individuals alike, I am told that when changing gear on an RT a smoother or less clunky change is possible by preloading the gear lever FIRST and THEN dipping the clutch to effect the change. I do apologise if this seems a ridiculously stupid post, but acting on info received (officer) I thought I would ask.
if this is all bollocks and all I would do by following the above advice is knacker the gearbox or gear lever or selecters then i just wont do it and will put up with the "CLUNKKKKKKKKK" when changing gears.

you dont say what year it is ? it may be an older model that had certain problems, it may help people with a lot more expertise than moi :D

I have had my 2011 RT for a few months and put 4.5k on it and after owning a new GS in 2008 and two new GSA's since then i can honestly say that this RT gearbox is by far the best ive had, it's clunk free and smooth as a babies bum.

Not much help but i have heard about the tip you mention but never tried it.

Thank you LBL...

LBL. Thank you for the reply. The bike is (or will be, hopefully an "R" plate with quite lowish 20000 miles.) It also has abs BUT I'm unable to find out if its servo ABS or Non Sevo ABS. .I did try Google, but to be honest a lot of the answers were ads or completely irrelevant.

thanks for taking the time to reply..

If it's an R reg it must be an R1100RT. The gear change is only clunky if you've never ridden a shaft drive BMW twin before.
If you have then normal gear change procedures work perfectly well unless you're an arse.

Cheers for that, Err lemme see, 3 1200's an 09 1300GT SE, yep all boxes ticked, except the arse one:blagblah Do you know if the ABS on an "R" plate R1100RT is servo or non servo?????

Thanks,

Mark

Having recently moved from an F800GS to a 2012 RT, I also find the shift down into 1st very noisy on occasions. It can be absolutely silent when selecting from N or a bit of a clunk - when shifting down on the move it's usually a real CLUNK!

I'd be interested in knowing whether there is a technique to avoid/reduce this - or is it simply a boxer thing?

Servo wasn't available on the 1100 models - it appeared on the 1150 models in 2002/03.

1200 models have lighter flywheels = big clunk :D

In my experience a clunky gearbox is entirely normal and part of the RT joie de vivre.
I wouldn't let it worry you. Just enjoy the bike and the freedom it will give you.

Is this a silly reply?

Previous post asks for the year/model of the bike, and you give a registration reference. Now, to those in the know, this may be a pointer, though they have to think about it.
What is wrong with saying "Its a 2015 R1300RT" or something like that.
To provide a comparison:
I live in Norn Iron. My bike is VLZ registered.
Now wasn't that helpful if you wish to know about it?
