Rubbing plates to protect your bike.

My GSA rear frame has the dreaded tin worm so I'm having it powder coated.

The TT frame protectors have done a good job. The dark area at the back has nearly worn through by boots rubbing.

But this is what was going on underneath. BMW paint on 08-09 bikes is poo but this is 1970s Kawasaki territory.

Thank goodness I can drive a spanner. What looks like surface rust around the swing arm bearing is 100% worse under the kick plates.

The subframe look a bit grumpy so while Mike is doing my FD I thought get it properly smartened up. It's a fekkin good job the wheel bearing has finally thrown in the towel.

That frame would be rubbed shiny smooth with use and the rest would be corrosion free if that TT protector wasn't fitted.

They sure do that but it's always had ACF-50 and that muck is greasy

This is what the front subframe looks like.

I saw some rust on there last year and dosed if well with ACF. But it's now a real mess.

I was hoping to have that coated at the same time but I don't have a suitable fixture to hold the engine with both subframes taken off.

My frame has a terrible finish. The area behind where no muck collects is nearly as bad.

The petrol tank clips are red rusty. Even the rear light bracket (under the silver seat base) looks like it was painted by marker pen.

My rear sub frame has experienced a similar fate; started stripping the bits of the rear end last night and have applied a coating of Flag rust converter which halts any further oxidation, leaves a black 'primer coat' until I can get the powder coating completed.

That's shocking! How many miles on the bike?
My 59plate 40k gs has the silver paint and it's still like new, and I don't wash it
Hard to believe it was that bad for those years

My paint has rubbed through due to my boots. I touched it up with silver hammerite and put some clear 25mm helicopter tape over it. That way I can see if it gets any worse and it protects it from rubbing.

soemtimes better just to let your boots rub, as said earlier it just stays shiny clean
any surface rust rubs off and you dont get shite trapped behind it.

The bike has nearly 50K miles and was stored outside for 12 months. But it's had paint touched up where practical and regular doses of ACF-50. Areas under the covers have been flooded with ACF yet the corrosion is the worst I've seen.
A pal has an 05 with silver frame that commutes every day. His engine has all sorts of corrosion scabs but the frame looks great.
I bought it nearly 2 years ago with 33K (approx).
The previous owner had full extended warranty. I guess he never looked under the petrol tank because otherwise I'm sure he'd have demanded the part be replaced. It must have been rusting for a very long time.
No disrespect to him. Nobody would expect to find this.

Stripping the front subframe is a monster job.
Does anyone know of a corrosion stopper that works?
e.g. something like POR-15. The Eastwood website says a lot but independent info would be better.

What do you call high mileage?

Me? Around 100k. But for most people these days probably about 20k . The point I was trying to make was that older neglected silver framed bikes still tend to have decent frame paint even when the engines are looking scabby. Black doesn't seem to fare so well.
