This must be simple. I'm setting up the mail accounts on my new MAC, and, having had an account with Freeserve (now Wanadoo) for years, it now won't respond to smtp.freeserve.com as an outgoing message server. Or wanadoo.co.uk either come to that.

Have they had some change of service that I don't know about that I have now manage to activate?

Authentication required now? Where it wasn't before.

Nope - tried that, makes no difference (and for what it's worth, their tech pages (which are full of mistakes)) say none is required...

Or at least, if it is required, it's not in any sensible form
:nenau

Window->Connection Doctor & Activity Viewer give any more clues as to why it won't connect to Wannapoo

No dice - just say scan't connect to the server - check connections yadayadayada...

Can you telnet to it from the terminal application?

ian-farquharsons-mac-mini:~ ian$ telnet mail.btinternet.com 25
Trying 217.12.12.124...
Connected to pop-smtp.bt.mail.yahoo.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 smtp805.mail.ukl.yahoo.com ESMTP
helo
250 smtp805.mail.ukl.yahoo.com
help
214 qmail home page: http://pobox.com/~djb/qmail.html

Obviously replace mail.btinternet.com with the smtp server at wannado, port 25 is implied by them not telling you different. If you can't get there it might be some dns stuff rather than the server itself. I can't remember the dialogue much past helo by hand.

Is your ISP still Freeserve/Wanadoo ?
If not, you'll prob need to amend your OUTGOING smtp mail address to whatever your current Isp's is...eg, Virgin = smtp.virgin.net......NTL = smtp.ntlworld.com etc.
Your INCOMING mail should be whatever it was e.g. pop (or mail).freeserve.com or whatever.

hmmm - anyone know what Homecall's is? None of the obvious works, and their site/literature doesn't say - they are awful but are the only non BT provider where I live.
