Hi, I'm after the benefit of your experience please.

I've just got my first 1200 ADV after a long history of sports bikes. I've never had heated grips before, or hand guards for that matter. I need some new waterproof gloves and I'm looking at Rukka Appolo.

My question is, although they are waterproof, they are unlined gloves. I intend on using these gloves for my daily commute through the winter in North West England and I'm wondering if, with the hand guards and heated grips, will unlined gloves be warm enough?

My journey to work is only about 35 minutes and I have the 30 year anniversary model with the slightly bigger hand guards if that makes any difference.

Opinions apreciated.

I have a pair and wear them through the year. They are ok until the temp gets to high single figures below zero on rides of two/three hours. If the ride is only half an hour may be ok even then.... But then again it depends how much you feel the cold...

P.s. they are excellent gloves ,my second pair of Rukka

Thanks for that, I've been using Rukka suits for years and they are excellent bits of kit, so I thought the gloves would be good.

I don't think I feel the cold any more than most. The ends of my finger tips started to become a bit painful just at the end of my ride when I used my sports bike in temperatures around 0. That was with lined gloves like PCM or thinsulate lining.

It sounds like they might be OK and the guards and grips do a decent job. I don't want to spend £150 on gloves only to have to go out and buy some more because my hands are freezing.

Got them and very nice gloves but they wont hold the cold at bay for ever. Try liners (esp heated ones) if you want them to be more cold ready, PS there is an internet fact/rumour that heated grips can cause gortex to work in reverse ie outside hotter than inside so water gets in rather than sweat vapour out.. but I have had no experience of that (dont have heated grips but do have heated glove liners)

I've got a pair, and done about 6,000 miles in them through various weathers.

I have been really suprised at their performance.....for a 'light' all weather glove they offer really good warmth, and excellent waterproof qualities.

I guess they wouldn't keep you as warm as full on winter gloves in the extreme cold....but they do an extremely competent job of keeping your hands warm in most situations...and without the bulk of winter gloves.

Top gloves, highly recommended.

I have a pair of Apollo for spring/summer/autumn riding, and a pair of Mars for the cold days in winter.
I would say below 5deg. C. I would wear the Mars for comfort, the grips helps, but as soon as you let go for any reason your hands fast get cooled down. Rukka gloves are general in top 3 in the market, and surely the Apollo are oen of the best you can buy at the moment.

Maybe a thin set of cotton inner gloves, could make them a little warmer in those cold days?! :comfort

Has anyone used the Pluto gloves?

They appear to be similar to the Mars glove but with knuckle protection, although they are not all leather.

I need a really warm winter glove as I have no heated grips.

Thanks everyone for your opinions, and to summarise, this is the impression I get. They are great gloves and may be fine for the temperatures and time I'm after, but on a very cold day I may benefit from thin liners.

The comment about gore-tex and heated grips making them work in reverse kind of doesn't matter because even if I bought lined winter gloves, I would still be using heated grips and they would still work in reverse. If in fact it's true and not just a rumour. (I haven't heard from anyone this has actually happened to, although in theory I get the idea.)

I will get myself a pair and see how they go. If I find they are too cold even with the heated grips and large guards, I will still have an excellent pair of gloves that I'm sure I'll get good use out of in the long run.

Silas I don't think you'd be disappointed.

I also failed to mention that I bought my pair just before a long trip...

....not knowing if they would work I also packed my regular winter gloves...

.....despite extremes of temperatures of heat and cold, along with heavy rain, I only ever used the Apollo gloves, and the winter gloves stayed in the top box....next time I wouldn't even bother taking them. :thumb2

I got a pair of the white ones coz they look class but feel they'd be a bit chilly for full on winter use but then when its that cold im in the car :D

Hi, I am looking to order these gloves but am buying from afar via mail order. My current RST gloves are size 9 and are a little tight. Can someone advise how the sizing goes. Are they smaller sized or larger? Obviously trying on would be best but the mail order has returns policy, I just want to get it right first time if possible - 9 or 10... Thanks in advance.

Er sizing, I tried on several pairs of Apollo gloves, they are small sized. On a sizing chart, my hand was a 10, but the Apollo 11 were tight and I reckon a 12 would be required for me.

i found the same.

These are excellent gloves and really are waterproof and warm to a very low temperature....they are perfect for the GSA, and the British summer. They're not as warm as a full winter glove, but they've not got the bulk either.

Since I've had mine my winter gloves have remained in the top box :thumb2

If you go for a short spin with no gloves on you will quickly realise that changing the hand guards will make a big difference to how cold your hands get! Trust me, one of the best modifications I've ever made.

I've got Apollo's and Atlas's. Atlas's only come out for long winter rides.:thumb2
