Apologies in advance for starting another final drive thread. My 06 1200RT has covered 85,000 kms since new with no final drive issues. Last night I did the usual rock the back wheel check and found no play whatsoever. However when I spun the wheel by hand I could hear a very distinct bearing rumble. I then eased the rear pads away from the rear disc in an effect to convince myself it was the pads that were making the noise. Alas, if anything the noise was worse. I then performed the same checks on a friends R1200GS and there was no bearing rumble. Should I arrange to have the complete unit rebuilt now or monitor it until it starts to leak??? Any sensible advice welcome.

Regards,
TK.

bearings have failed seem to happen a lot on the 1200 models !:comfort

It sounds (!) like the bearing is toast. It'll only get worse and quickly if it's rumbling.

I had a rough feeling rear bearing at 22k (miles) and had it replaced straight away, then again at around 80,000 miles due to excess play. No roughness 2nd time and I rode another 4k or so on that one.

It's around £300 ukp to replace the biggun in the back.
