I have recently picked my new 800GS and love it :JB
I was told by the dealership that I should keep the revs about 3500/4000 for a while and not to strain the engine.
Can anyone tell me how long (how many kms) is “a while”?
Do I have to wait till the first service at 1000kms or is there a certain amount of kms which is deemed to be acceptable? :nenau

Until first service, then you can ride with a bit more freedom. Even after my first service, I still took it easy for about a thousand miles.

From the rider manual, page 62:

Running in
The first 1000km
While running in the motorcycle, vary the throttle opening and engine-speed range frequently.

Try to do most of your riding during this initial period on twisting, fairly hilly roads, avoiding high-speed main roads and highways if possible.

Cheers!
