I came accross this website which gives different advice about running in your new bike with better performance and reliability outcomes backed up with technical information. In short - Run It In Hard!

http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

As I will be in this situation in the near future I would appreciate your views as it will go against manufacturer recommendations.

Paul.

On the downside, if you run it in like you've just stolen it, and there's a problem, and BM can work out how you ran it in .............................

BTW AFAIK the latest software knows what distance you've done, so it wouldn't be hard to work out the above :(

well I'm not trying to short change the run in procedure but that website was quite compelling doing it a different way. How would the BMW software tell if you ran it in hard? Do they record RPM, MPH as well as distance?

I would concur with the "run it in hard" group. I ran my 1200GS-A in 2 years ago like that and have had no engine issues, no oil burn and a smooth powerful motor and I`ve just gone through 36,000miles.

I did change the oil though at 300 miles to make sure it was clean.

I`ve always been in the truck business and we never run in new truck engines. They are under load from the word go and have a hard life!!

Same for diesel cars, drive them hard from the word go and you`ll get a good engine!

I ran mine in exactly as it says in the book.

Result: Perfect, uses no oil.

That website is only to be trusted if you think Americans are right about everything all the time, ie not. Maybe it works well for race engines :nenau Maybe it works well for tractors and Hardlys.

Ran in my 57 GS12 as per book...........magic however used oil!.......08 GS12 bit less of a paranoid fanny.......oil consumption much less!........09 Adventure will be playing with sportsbikes from the moment it leaves the showroom if you get my drift!:bounce1:bounce1:bounce1

Hi PH

Pick my 07 GS Adv up year last May, got it home 20miles or so, next morn went to Le Mans and back for the Moto GP, just rode the thing too keep up with my mates, not thrashing just norm riding (as if run in etc) Result? never used a drop of oil.....and so smooth now

Bike before...04 Standard 12, run in as per jap stuff etc nice and steady, result? used shed loads of oil.

So I would just ride the thing, no kid gloves :rob.......Enjoy

Yeah my dealer advised not to ride it in easy.

He told me to ride it throughout the RPM range and change lots of gears. Never let it run at a constant RPM. I was told not to red line it too much and never let the revs drop too low under load.

Then make sure to get the first service done.

Today mine doesn't burn oil and pulls nice in all gears.

Perfect engine since new.

As Radrod's post, told same info by dealer after 500 miles ride it hard but avoid rl.
Mine burns oil though uses 1/2 ltr every 1500 miles.

Not bad only 11 posts - a year ago this subject and that fecking american website would have generated a 100 posts and several barnies by now. Why do you want to thrash a new bike - its new. Take time to get used to it before you open it up. Both you and it will benefit.

Running in

Why not simply follow the instructions in the handbook? At 4000 rpm you are pretty near the legal limit; you can achieve quite respectable acceleration within this rev range. In my (French) book it tells me to avoid autoroutes and look for sinewy roads with light slopes.etc;etc. All very pleasant and relaxed - and the tyres and brakes are also gettig their 'rodage' and I m getting used to the feel of my (2nd ) new 1200GS. (Did the same drill on the 2004 model & never had any problem nor used any oil.)
