Ok, here's the story:

Took off battery to charge it up, replaced battery, wasn't running well at all. Checked the throttle cables as advised by GS owners on this site. Put them in correctly, bike started running better. Thought that was problem solved, turned off bike.

Few days later, went to go out on the bike, not running well. When revved up, it was popping on the over-run, and running very lumpy. Checked on here, did the MOTRONIC RESET, and now the bike is running better at tickover, but seems a little higher revs (about 1,500rpm). Sure it wasn't that much before.

So, now, with all throttle cables seated correctly, and the Motronic reset done, it idles ok, but when i rev the engine very gently, the revs DIP, it coughs and then revs up fairly normally.

Can anyone suggest what to check next? I'd rather not take it to a dealer for them to charge extorsionate prices for something that could be simple.

HELP!!!!:nenau

I'd check your fuel and the fuel filter. If the petrol has water in it it can cause problems and if the fuel filter is blocked it will result in poor fuel flow.

Have you checked the throttle balance? Spark plugs? HT leads?

Some ideas for ya but they are a simple engine so not much to work through till you find the solution. Just make sure that the cables are correctly seated everytime you do anything. It's easy to forget and then you'll end up having to go through it all again.

um,,,

well, not checked them. the leads, do they just pull off the side of the engine? I had a quick tug at them earlier, but they seemed quite happy to stay where they were! The bike is garaged all the time, just gets wet practically every time i take it out!

where do i find the fuel filter? Don't have any manuals to tell me much about the bike!

The fuel filter's inside the tank :(

Do a quick search..there have been a few threads about replacing it and the care needed to avoid bending the float arm so you don't get a screwed up reading on the guage...and check out the fuel filter external mod as well ;)

It does sound like the coil packs in the plug leads could be in and advanced state of fekkedness........normally one starting to fail would only be evident at a few thousand revs under load where the bike behaves like it's got a fuel blockage, but if yours are really knacked it could cause the symptoms you're ralking about.

Also try the reset procedure again......I've had to do mine a couple of times before now ;)

From the symptoms you quote the throttle balance is the most likely culprit. Only needs to be slightly out to cause bad running. Easy to fix, sort that then move on to more complicated stuff if that doesn't cure it :thumb
EDIT: is it a twin spark or single?

Is the choke/fast idle returning fully closed on both sides ?

If it's a twin spark engine, pull the lower plug caps off, then see how it runs.
If it only runs on on cylinder, swop the main plugcaps ( with the inbuilt coils) over, and see if the problem moves to the other side. If so it's the plug cap.

remember this is only for twin spark engines ;)

I agree with whats been said, my 2003 twin spark did exactly the same thing and it was the ignition coils that had degraded (apparently, still not got the foggiest what they do). It was running rough and felt like not enough fuel was getting through, and did exactly the same when sat idiling, to the point where it would even cut out! Once they were changed all was well again. :thumb

That was done under warranty so I fully believe what the mechanic said. And I am not the most technically minded guy....

i've said it before - so i'll keep saying it. :rob :rob

any problem you experience directly after some sort of 'maintainance' is 99%'guaranteed to be directly related to the jobs you did along the way.

you won't have 'miraculously' developed a new problem.

did you leave the air filter sensor disconnected ? for instance

more than likely its throttle balance related - the cables aren't seating in the exact same spot or they are now kinked or tighter routed

Bugger...

so many replies!!! ok,

firstly, it is a twin spark. I will pull off the leads tomorrow and have a look.

secondly, I'm inclined to agree with the last reply, saying that problems don't just appear miraculously. I've ballsed up somewhere, but my limited knowledge of GS mechanics (mechanics in general!) is inhibiting me finding out whats wrong. Bear with me guys!!!

Will keep playing and let you know how its going.

Cheers!

I applied ACF50 all over the bike, then it started playing up, & it was the coils. I thought I'd done something wrong. But I hadn't.
