My r80/7 has several steel items that rust up regularly after they were wire brushed to remove the last lot of rust!

Both axles , top yoke plate, yoke nut.

Yoke nut I'll just buy a new one

The axles if I buy a new one will it be 'protected' in any way or will it just rust? Or can I 'coat' the old ones once cleaned?

And top yoke plate same question how long will new one last before rusting or shall I powder coat or electrically coat the old one?

Cheers

Ps I'm asking because I'm cheap and looking for alternatives to throwing money at it ;)

The best thing is to coat the parts in acf50.

If you look at the /6 top yokes they were satin chromed and last a long time. Well worth hunting down.

You can easily and cheaply get them zinc plated. I'd be surprised if anyone would charge more than about £20 for a handful of bits :thumb

Quick google search doesn't come up with any zinc platers in lancashire - any known good ones people can recommend that do mail order?

Do you know anyone that subscribes to 'Old Bike Mart'? It's full of ads for restoration specialists. I use zinc plating a lot but my platers are local to me down in Hampshire. My best advice is to clean off any corrosion yourself before sending off. Platers will degrease and prepare but if you want a shiny finish put some effort in first.

Hope this helps.

You have to be a bit careful with (zinc) electroplating high carbon steels - they can become brittle. Probably none of these bits are high-enough carbon to suffer, and probably the guy doing the job will now enough about it to do the post-process heat treatment to de-embrittle the bits, but worth educating yourself before you go, I'd imagine.

The steel can become brittle or the coating is brittle?

Neither. There is no meaningful temperatures with Zinc or Chrome plating. Chrome can debond if the items are not properly prepared, zinc also. Professional platers know their craft. Items are pre cleaned by blasting if necessary and acid etched to provide a clean bonding surface. You are not plating high carbon steels. I can't think of any motorbike component that could be classified as high carbon or has free carbon which could effect the bond. Ask the man doing the job.

Shaws stainless do some very nice stainless replacement axles and top nuts
Bit pricy but by the time you have messed about running here and there.

Seconded. beautifully made, good value and should last forever. I wish he made stuff for all my bikes.

Gone with a plater in Birmingham £60 for box of bits , will post before n after photos when they're back.

Being a peasant the Gucci stuff from shaws was not financially viable for me!

I just clean them off and paint a bit of rub n buff on them, it keeps the rust off and looking like new.

They're a bit beyond a bit of buff x
