Ok, need some help if anyone has come across this, just so that I know what to expect when I take it in.
2010 (May) 1200 ADV. 3800miles ish, not used in the salt and always garaged.
I have noticed that most of the front engine cover bolts have rusted and there is light rust around the welds on the adventure protection bars.

I will be going to the dealer to discuss this, just wondered what other dealers have said about this problem as I know others have done the same.

Thanks.

I have a 2010 (march) GSA and have ridden it through the winter. I haven't had rusty bolts or nuts, but then I've used Scottoiler FS365. I have noted the odd surface rust on the engine bars (not just at the welds), but a gentle brush with a stiff brush took it off. I've noticed the odd bit of rust on the top box rack, but again a gentle brush has taken it off.
I don't know where you stand from a warranty point of view but I think it's p**s poor that bikes (not just BMW's) rust/corrode so easily, especially considering the price you pay. But while ever we all continue to buy the bikes and not make a fuss the manufacturers will continue to get away with it :blast

Well, quite...
Never had rusty nuts before, and a little annoying when its kept in a nice warm garage.
Oh well guess I'll see what they say but I dont think a set of new bolts is unreasonable.

Its not the end of the world I know but it just ain't right.....:comfort

Is there lots of ventilation in your garage. My machine tools used to get a lot of surface corrosion due to poor ventilation. Cured it by putting in a couple of plastic air vents. Also my mate could understand why his bike used to get surface corrosion. Turned out it was the tumble drier chucking out damp warm air.

Ummm well yes there is good ventilation. And at the risk of slagging off BMW.... but well, here goes.
I have owned a large number of bikes of which the last 8 or so have lived in this particular garage, ranging from new to four or five years old.
Funny that its never happened before???:augie

The worst bike I had for corrosion was a FZ6, within 3 months of winter riding it didn't look good at all. But by far the worst I've ever seen was my mates Bandit, shocking.
Whatever BMW use to coat the crash bars and luggage racks (which to a novice appears the same) doesn't seem up to the job of fending off British weather

Same for me(front engine bolts) on March 2010 GS. In garage during winter - no salt. I asked the dealer the question and was told not a warranty issue. Explanation was that corrosion on nuts cause by tool BMW use to tighten them up??????

No big deal but still seems crap. I will be interested to hear how you get on.

Seems a little harsh for BMW to refur to their mechanic as a tool.... but probable not far wrong.

Well Im not having it, that is a very poor excuse, bet it took a while to think that one up.
Sounds like it may be fun when I get to speak to them.

July 2010 GSA with 7,300 miles - rust on crash bars and where the frame bolts onto the engine. I also use FS365 and avoid salty roads.

Haven't raised it with the dealer yet.

P.

2010 GSA 7.8k miles used FS365 and avoided most of the winter salt by using a winter hack vitara.

I've also noticed surface rust on pannier frames, around welds on the crash bars and thought I noticed something on the framework behind the beak this morning (must check later).

Cotswold have also already replaced rocker covers due to corrosion.

This bike has had fewer winter miles than my other BMs, more washing and was the first on which I've used FS365 (is there a lesson for me?). But it does seem to have been more susceptible than the others.

Well, been into CW at Dorchester today. Showed them my rusty nuts, they said..........No, not covered in the warranty, BMW not to blame, they blame it on the Eurocrats saying that they wont let BMW plate the fixings with something or other.

Sounds like a load of crap to me.

Those Rally 3 jackets are nice though, but £500....bloody hell.

Probolt stainless on my last (54) GS. No rusting issues as you can imagine. Current 2010 bike bolts are fairing slightly better, one or two disc bolts beginning to go now. I'll wait til they look really shite and then I'll take a trip to Probolt again. Not cheap but you get what you pay for blah blah blah:rob
