Has anybody had a problem with rust in the see through bit of the rear spindle.
Mine is a mess and the dealer says nothing can be done about it.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks

Rust on rear spindle

Had the same problem on mine, rust on it when bike was only months old.

I complained to the dealers, Allan Jeffries, who had a go at cleaning it. It was still not right so I complained a bit more and they then replaced the entire final drive unit under warranty.
It would appear from what they said it is not possible to replace just the spindle so the whole unit had to be replaced.
Hate to think what it would have cost.

Still, looked a lot better when they had finished :D

Rust on spindle

My bike also sufferred with is - very badly actually. Took it to dealers, SPC, who seemed very surprised but replaced the whole unit under warranty with no problems what so ever.

Thought I was the only one until I saw this post!

Nearly time

If the bike is still under warranty and your dealer won't pursue it take a decent sized close up and print it to A4.
Visit the NEC show and ask to see Howard Godolphin on the BMW stand. Show him the picture in front of other show visitors and await the reaction.

I'd be willing to bet there's a call from your dealer waiting for you when you get home.

I did this with my crackling paint on final drive of 1150 GS after the dealer had been told by BMW weeks earlier it wasn't a warranty issue. Sorted with smiles and good humour - wasn't their fault at all.

Thanks for the response. It was Alan Jeffries that refused to do anything.

Use some wire wool to clean it up. Then apply some waxoyl with a paint brush. That's what I've done. Cheers.
Thanks for the response. Tried that more than once, the rust is eaten in.

Had the same on my 04 12GS, the final drive was replaced under warrantee :thumb (at SPC)

Alan Jeffries seems to think it is a common problem that they can do nothing about.
Williams say on the phone that they have not heard of it, so I will be taking it in there for them to look at. My warranty runs out this month.
