S/S HID Brackets for 1200 and ADV

Hi I am using Colebatch's ballasts the ones with the fins. I will post a pic at the weekend. (If i get time)

Yes the finned ones are good, mount the supplied mount strip on the holes that are in the bracket so the ballasts are half of the plate (for full fork clearance) and then when you tie wrap the cables back mount to each side of the sub frame that comes through the beak, this will really steady them and firm the bracket a lot, as these ballasts are quite heavy.
And the bracket is mounted behind the cooler lugs onto the rubber? Make sure that it has been torque'd up.

Hi Les i think i have fitted them as you do but used a bracket instead of a tie wrap to steady the bracket. pics attached if it works

Yes no problem there you have done a good job, in the first picture were the subframe bar is I route the cables up each side there and fasten them which stops any movement in the plate, the new Ultra Slim ballasts are so light there is no wobble. :thumb2

Hi Les many thanks for the quality approach fitting the HID conversion to my GS, the pictures you have posted certainly do it justice. The installation is totally rigid and the conversion certainly attracts attention from other motorists. It was a pleasure to meet you and I hope you remember to contact me when you get the mods sorted for the migsell mounted lighting.

been playing with my mounting bracket on the GSA this morning.

i wasn't happy with the amount of flex going on so i looked for a neat solution. i thought i'd drill the bracket dead centre just in front of the crease behind the HID mount area so an M6 bolt through the new hole would align with the spotlight mount captive nut in the crash bar (i don't have spotlights).

i thought this was a brilliant solution until i realised fixing the ballast bracket securely removes all the rubber mounting benefit for the oil cooler. not a brilliant idea at all then :(

so i can have the bracket that flexes too much, or have it not flex at all, both of which i am unhappy with in regard to the oil cooler mounting properly. surely the most important consideration IMO.

back to the drawing board for me then :blast

Not sure which HiD kit you are useing, but I put the cables up each side and tiewrap them to the front subframe, this stops nearly all movement but still uses the rubber mounts, other than that try a tiewrap in the whole insted of a bolt.

hmmm.

had another idea for fixing, but it will take me a couple of days to try it out.

If you do mount it with the M6 bolt the bracket if tightened up to BM torque should only act like a washer and not affect the cooler mounting.

i think you'll find the oil cooler will mount hard up against the bracket, which unlike a washer is now fixed solid by the extra bolt, so no isolation for the cooler.

i admit, i never got as far as actually bolting it all up, but that was what was happening on trial fixing. i may be wrong, but i don't think so :nenau

If you didn’t get round to bolting it up you wont know :mmmm the bracket sits on the rubber after the washer so it's just like a washer, then drops down but is not hard up to the cooler, couple of mill gap, this is why there is a little flex, if forced with the hand backward, depending on the weight at the front of the bracket it just sits there when the engine is on, as any vibration is absorbed into the rubber and then if the cables are tied back stops bracket movement.
Yes if you then get hold and force it back it would move, but under normal use it sits and does not move or vibrate.
The ones I have fitted have little (only the heavier ballasts) or no movement.

Best to mount the ballasts, fit the bracket then tie the cables back to each side then see how it all looks, after that if you are still not happy then try fastening it at the front with tie wraps or then a bolt.

All the ADV’s that I have done with and with out spotlights have been the easiest to fit as the shape of the bracket sites well with the engine bars, there does look a little more space if the spot light bar is no fitted but mount the ballasts to the top side of the bracket and you can hardly notice them.

Just a point cookie, my bracket is now bolted at the front as well as you can see from the above pics. The oil cooler can still flex on the rubber mounts. I have tried it and it still moves as it did before.

fair enough. like i said, i never actually tried it bolted right up. i don't see how it flexes, but you've done it and it does :)
i didn't want to drill my bracket to find out for sure :blast
are you going to the hograost? i'd be very interested to see your installation.

anyway, in the meantime, i have just about finished the prototype for the bracket i actually plan to use

fits the bike a treat, 3 easy to get to fixings and 2 ballasts are tucked out of the way and completely rigid on their own lightweight carrier.

when it's finished, i'll show it on a separate thread (i don't want to hijack this one too much) and everyone can tell me what's wrong with it :D

TBH i think i always just wanted to make my own

Looking foward to it :P
