Hi all, did exercise wyvern trench war walk on Salisbury Plain last Friday, 9:30 - 5pm, transported around, educated and entertained, and all for free! Only found out about it whilst fixing my pals trail bike when a couple of local mountain bikers stopped for a chat. It's run on behalf of the military by a serving Major, assisted by the MOD's archeologist and a history buff. They gave a very personal insight into the Australians training and preparations for the battle of Messines, the trench training, the conditions, the mine they detonated, the machine gun pits they dug, all of which we could clearly see evidence of, they even had a replica Lewis gun set up in one to demonstrate the difficulties in advancing against well sited machine guns, with an MG42 in another we walked forward clueless as to the fact there were even two guns "mowing us down", they got their point over. The research these guys do is amazing and they were able to recount the lives of the guys who carved their names into the trees in 1915.

Stout walking boots or wellies for the wet grass and a picnic lunch advised.
