Quick question is this white the same as the white on the rallye bike as I've sourced a set of rallye plastics minus this piece .

It 'should' be. The last version of Alpine white was introduced in the mid 90's
The chances if it being an exact match is a gamble though, your bike and the bike from which this part came from are likely to have been kept in different environments and thus will have aged in different ways.
Chances are that it won't be far enough out for anyone to notice but you though ;)

Cheers for clearing that up tunner :thumb
These are the bits I purchased for £80 but a lot of it is of no use to me so I'll be listing on here any surplus parts I have .

No worries,

You sir picked up a right bargain with that little lot!!

I've used Halfords Alpine White on my Rallye hand guards and it's not a great match, more creamy. Cruising around a local carpark I think Ford Frozen White might be a better match, there's a can sitting in my garage waiting for me to be arsed to reprint the hand guards. A couple of panels on my bike were replaced after a little off, and in the right light you can see they are not the same as the original paint. Maybe Chris will know: does white paint yellow slightly with age? The Dulux I use in my house certainly does but I haven't noticed it on vehicle paint (except for red)

Does it stick to the hand gaurds ok ,any rubbing down or primer needed ?

The hand guards are almost certainly polypropylene. Nothing sticks easily to that stuff. Check with some paint solvent. You will need a special bonding promer and might need to flash flame the plastic immediately before spraying the primer.

Might be a bit out of my skill range ,I never mastered painting by numbers:blast

Trust me when I say this, and I mean it with the greatest respect ..... choosing a colour that might be close isn't going to yield you the result you're looking, then painting them with rattle cans is a recipe for disaster.
it's a £10k + GS LC, you could easily turn it into one that looks like a £6k one ;)

Hers one I've been working on for a while now :blast

I was told by a painter that there are more variations of whites and blacks than any other colours.

According to the parts fische, a White TU was painted in 'Alpin-Weiss 3 (U751)' and a Rallye in 'Alpin-Weiss 3 (YN90)'. The handguards for a Rallye shows 'White (Q490A)'. I wonder whether U751, YN90 and Q490A are paint codes and if you gave these numbers to a paintshop they could mix the appropriate shade. Not that I know much about such things, but perhaps Tunneruk could advise.

Alpin-Weiss 3 is the third and last incarnation of BMW Alpine white which has been the stable colour since the mid 90's. Those codes above will only have meaning at the BMW factory so don't necessarily translate to a third party paint supplier fiche. There's a good chance that the variation in those codes will denote the finish (Gloss / satin / matt etc)

I used a plastic primer on my hand guards, the paint has been on for a couple of years and still looks fine. I've used the same primer on other plastic parts an it worked well it's Rust-Oleum from my local DIY shop. I only painted the hand guards as the met finish of the plastic is a bit of a bugger to clean and a smooth painted finish is easier.

I don't think the original white finish is painted, I'm pretty sure it's a through-colour of the plastic.

Update. Finally managed to source a couple of bits I was missing ,but the majority where got from a job lot off eBay I won .
I got out this afternoon and set about the transformation of which only took me an hour or so and wow I'm totally over the moon with the finished job.
I've had the bike 2 yrs and I'll be keeping it another couple now.:thumb

Very nice, shame about the silver frame though! You've got a unique motorcycle there.

Cheers green man it is a shame about the frame ,I'll have to keep my eye on eBay for a red one :D

Black wheels look good. Painted or powder coated ?

Cheers Andy ,powder coated they are but not a very good job by the looks of things I don't think they where etched properly .
I've only got to touch em with a spanner and they chip.:(
