Sammy Miller Italian day - photos.

The yellow Garreli with the two sprockets is a Garreli Tiger Cross, a 50 (49?) CC Moped. The two cogs was a factory fitment so the owner could alter the gearing to suit. The little engine had difficulty pulling its own top two gears, so I’m assuming if you were off roading you moved the wheel and put the chain on the big sprocket, and the little one for road riding.

I remember at school in Bedford in 1974 there was a lad parked his in the school car park. It got a lot of attention. Not because of the sprockets, no one ever noticed them but because it looked lovely and had a very cool name.

We had a good look into the engine case, to see whether there was a parallel smaller front sprocket (to keep the chain in line, and so that the chain length didn't have to be altered so dramatically) but couldn't see one. Fascinating concept.
