Samsung dead phone - recover photos?

A friend dropped her phone - screen is just a green blob but it receives calls etc.

She's asked me to see if I can get her photos off (was being backed-up to cloud but Samsung's cloud service no longer stores photos, doh!)

Tried a trial of Fonedog but since I cannot power down (can't press the second Power Off icon as screen is bust), I cannot make that work. I'm waiting for it to run out of power then try again from dead.

Phone appears as "Galaxy S*" in Explorer on PC but says "Folder Empty"....

Any ideas from the massive?

Perhaps the simplest thing is to replace the screen and see what it’s like then.
 
Good call but she's bought another phone already and her husband reckons the interface hardware is compromised (Google search result) so screen may not work if replaced anyway.

It's odd that it appears in Explorer but the directory is empty.
 
I could be wrong, but I thought photos on G4/5 Samsung phones were automatically backed up & would remain available to view if she simply signs in to her Google Account.

That’s because in the Android settings your phone is probably looking in the incorrect place! Under the connection menu (if you could see it) would be a menu to allow you to change it from a usb storage device to a digital camera.

I’ve not checked it can do it but the brilliant Windows Freeware App (MyPhoneExplorer) might be able to get you around this issue.

Just to close this, he took the phone to a phone shop who managed to recover everything and transfer it to her new phone for £30.

Sorry no technical details.

Make sure she sets up the new phone with a Google account to back up photos to G Drive or another cloud service. My photos go into a free Dropbox account initially but the space allocated on the free account is not great. Every now and then I filter out the unwanted crap and archive the decent ones to G Drive and mirror to Microsoft Onedrive.
 
Cheers Wessie. She had Samsung cloud but they discontinued photo backup a while ago. Now she has multiple clouds I'm told!

Best cloud is Microsoft 365 Family. Get it for £51 for 15 months, 6 licences each with 1TB cloud.

It will say the folder is empty on PC as the phone needs be awake as in on and not on power save.
Windows will then allow you access.
And/or use Samsung Smartswitch to back up the phone. That will work even if your screen does not.

Smartswitch will offer you to save as spbm format or spbm and scv.

All the above at zero cost.
 
I think you will find if this is the first time its been connected to that PC you will need to allow the PC to see the phone which can only be done on the Phone screen

Android is secure
