An easy slog through France, Plymouth is not a good option, expensive when you combine 2 ferry costs and exchange rate.
The mileage in the same, through UK or starting from Roscoff or Cherbourg.
Cork - Roscoff is the shortest crossing but heavily booked in summer, They only go on Saturday.

A mate & myself are in the early stages of sorting a trip to southern Spain or Portugal for 2018. Some suggested what you're asking about - ferry to UK, ride to southern UK port, ferry to northern Spain.

To me this seems a lame option - UK is no different to Ireland in terms of roads, traffic & weather, so why bother with it (if your goal is a "foreign" bike trip)?

Cork - Roscoff is what we've settled on. I gather some of the roads along the west coast of France are less than fabulous, but that still beats feeling sick on two ferries and spending the same if not more money, to be forced to mingle with fuck-knows-who.

Two comfy days down through France is my understanding of things, though I gather some lads happily blast down in one day.

Interested to hear what your mate settles on, and how it works out for him. :thumb2

2018 ?? I agree with forward planning , but that is taking things a bit far.
We did this this year - cheap ferry to Roscoff (early Sept) , and were in the Picos (Pottes) in 2 slightly long but relatively easy days !

 Yep. Combination of OCD and excited impatience. :thumb The trip will be a 50th birthday celebratory event.

In the absence of the actual trip, I find the research and planning fun and satisfying - potential routes, kiting out the bike, the camping gear, possible sights to see...

OP - for me it comes down to one (relatively) short ferry trip and two days spent riding from northern France to northern Spain vs two ferry trips, and time spent riding through UK. However theoretic this is for me at this time, to me that seems to be the short of it.

I guess you'll get better experience-based advice from lads who've actually done both versions of the trip.

Keep the head down, if the ferry land early, its a one day trip.
All the French roads are great, toll roads if you want to scrub off the miles.

+1 for this. There are some nice country routes through Brittany while heading south. But the péage (toll) routes
will definitely speed things up if a tad un-scenic. Just be aware some of the tolls are pricey and fuel prices on the
péage roads are more expensive.

I plug in a Hypermarket into the satnav and find one on my route. Jump off and fill up cheap. Irish cards worked everywhere.

Yeah, I generally find that the likes of Super U, Carrefour and Intermarche are best for fuel. And like you, I've not had a problem paying by card.

You ask for any advice.
I would humbly suggest getting the bike sent via http://www.overlanders.ie/ to Bilbao and flying to meet it. By the time you pay for ferries, peage, half a back tyre etc, its cheaper. And more importantly, you add 4 days to your holiday in that you are starting and finishing from where you wish to be. Book the flight well in advance. Drop & pick up the bike in Gorey.

I'm with Myke :thumb
Why would you use your precious holidays to 'commute' to the good stuff ?
I allowed myself to be persuaded to ride to the Pyrenees this year, have flown in for the last 6 years, and I ain't going to happen again. The 2 days each way plus the ferry turned what used to be a very pleasant 7/8 day fly/ride trip on warm twisty roads into an almost 2 week slog. Even the good bit in the middle was spoiled somewhat cos I knew I had to ride back

But if I had to go all the way by bike I certainly wouldn't be going through England....

I did Holyhead - Portsmouth - Santander in July (and reverse route back home) which was handy enough. Previously trudged down and back up though France to Roscoff which was a bore.

I spent a couple of days on the great roads of Wales going down to Portsmouth and pottered my way back up through England on the way back - plenty to see and do e. g. Sammy Miller's Museum in Hampshire, Imperial War Museum at Duxford, National Motorcycle Museum in Brum. Fun way to extend the holiday :thumb

weighed up the ride through france or ferry from plymouth portsmouth

when i went picos in october

decided on the ferry as two days riding didnt appeal - you know what kinda miles i do :D

yes it wasnt cheap but ferry to france petrol tolls two days stopping and food and tyres woulda been the same

if the shipping costs the ferry then do that

.....Agree with you Shuck Rider....did Picos this year, going Dublin/Holyhead...relaxing overnight in Bristol, easy run to Plymouth next day and lovely sail to Santander!!.....then 2 days in Picos followed by trip over Pyrenees and leisurely ,enjoyable run up through France and Cherbourg/Roslare home......I'm afraid I'm old school and still love the complete journey adventure!!!!!!

Check out the already open Bordauex 2017 blog on here, there are a few guys already going or returning using the transport just one way.
There are currently 4 places left for 2017.

This service will also be running in June 2018 as I have had quite a lot of interest already.

Dont the french have some sort of intercity train that you can put your car on, is there also a bike capable version? If it goes fast like TGV that would take a lot of the slogging off the trip.

It costs a fortune and doesn't run from the Brittany or Normandy ports.
Bike rental would be another option.
