Sargent seat fit

Hi All,

After much bum-ache, I finally managed to get my hands on a sargent seat from another member of this forum, and I have been testing it today. It's too early to tell if it's going to be more comfortable over distance, but I'll be putting some miles on over the next few days.

My question is about the fit of the seat. To me, it's really bad in all positions except the position that's absolutely the worst for me - Low front and High rear! In any other position the fit of the front of the seat is appalling - it's about an inch from the tank and asymmetric (it's much worse on the right).

So yes, this IS about vanity - I want the seat to look good, and the only position I can achieve a good look is the testicle-crushing position.

So can anyone help? Any tips/tricks? I've put photos of the position combinations below, and I'm looking forward to the piss-taking. . .

in this pic, it appears that the seat is not fitted properly.

i might be dreaming, but c an i see a clip on the rhs of the seat not engaged?

there is a gap with sargents in some positions, but not usually like that.

Yes, I thought the clip on the right was not engaging properly, but that was as good as I could get it.

I will be trying it again, and maybe I can tighten the clip receiver or the clip itself.

Further to the clip comment, I just shot out to the garage and re-fitted the seat again.

The clip is as engaged as it can be - on my 2006GS it just clips into the grey side panels, there's no dedicated receiver. By hitting the right-hand side of the seat with my hand I can straighten up the seat so that it's no longer asymmetrical (high-tech solution there), but the gap between the seat and the tank is large enough to push my hand into.

I've had the same issue with the stock seat, but not to this extent.

I was just wondering if anyone else uses the Sargent seat in this position (Low back and High front), and has the same issue?

That one is pretty bad. A few years ago I bought an 05 GS with a home made cut down low seat. I saw a regular height Sargent seat for sale "like new" and asked the seller why he was selling it? He said because he didn't like it. OK so I bought it.
It had a gap in the nose like yours, maybe not quite as bad, and had me sliding forward. Overall I thought it was a horrible seat so the next day I put it on the flea market. I immediately got a call asking about it and why I was selling it? I just said "I don't like it". He bought anyway.
Most of the ones I see are mounted high front, low rear with a poor fit. The owners say they don't care it's more comfortable that way.

if its comfy in low position and no real big gap,drop your pegs,problem sorted. the gap on mine increases slightly if i faff about with different combinations.I dropped my pegs & the seats are lower than stock & i wanted my feet firmly planted when stopping.

1200gsa seat slides you in to tank, sarg seat (standard) in low position with lower pegs worked for me.

I didn't mean to put anyone off the seat - please bear in mind that this thread is all about the "look", not the function.

The vast majority of people who have bought this seat rate it as the best seat available for long-distance rides. I will be doing about 600 miles over the coming weekend and if I can do that without being in agony at the end, well, I'll put up with the gap, or figure out a "pretty" fix.

Also bear in mind that I'm old. . . so very old. . . and even if my arse stops hurting I have plenty of other body parts that now give me pain.

Plus the R1200GS - well, no-one ever bought it because it looks cool, and I doubt anyone is going to notice yet another heath-robinson fix. I was thinking of jamming a pampers nappy into the gap and scribbling on it with a black felt-tip pen. . .

I think you may have a duffer

I had to keep my standard BMW seat on high front and low back to avoid ball destruction. My (low) Sargent is on low low and perfectly level and comfortable. No asymmetry or even ability to make it asymmetric by bashing or pulling.

They feels a bit harder than the standard seat to start with so I assumed I would be more uncomfortable. When the fuel light came on the first time out I knew I had that wrong. Most comfortable seat I have ever had on any bike.

i wouldn't change my sargent seat for all the tea in china. It transformed the riding comfort even though it appears to be alot firmer than stock & as previously stated your nuts don't get shoved under your ass.it must have been one weird individual at BMW that designed that piece of sh*t.

Google "Woollies trim materials" and see if you can get a length of rubber car door seal to fill the gap.

Europa components also sell trim materials for car restorations.

I have a patterdale terrier which would probably fit but I'm not sure I could put up with the constant howling - too much like riding a Japanese four. . .

Here is the answer if you want to 'tidy up' the gap. This was standard on the 1100/1150s.

Car door trim or at least the soft rubber tubes will fit more neatly and still cost peanuts.

Those with an O shape rubber may be best as it could be cut off the U-shape gripper

Firstly, I'd like to thank everyone that have given sensible suggestions - I am impressed.

However, I've just got back from a 600-mile trip and can confirm that I will not be keeping the seat. The problems were:

• In no position was the seat noticably more comfortable for me than the stock seat - perhaps my behind is too bony for me to be considered a true "Tosser".
  
  
• When in the most comfortable position (High front Low back) the friction of the seat surface gave way under sharp braking or engine deceleration, causing me to slam forward into the tank (ouch) and throwing my face toward the screen, which I felt was unsafe and certainly disconcerting.
  
  
• The Sargent seat seems to be at least one inch lower than stock, and this caused massive cramping in my legs which made the entire trip a misery. I know that lowered footpegs could solve that one, but I don't really want to go that route, and as I didn't find the seat any more comfortable than stock, it's not a mod worth doing.

So, I'll be putting the seat back in the items for sale section to get my money back and if it doesn't sell there I'll pop it on ebay and make a profit on the deal.

So, hopefully this seat will go to someone short & fat enough to appreciate it . . .
