Sargent Seat - Rust

Hi Folks,

Just wondering if anyone has had an issue with a Sargent seat and specifically Rust?

I bought a new pair (front and rear) in August 2012 so just under 2 years ago and all the staples and fixings are rusting really badly - looks awful. The bike is not ridden between end of Sept till late March so has not seen any, and I mean any salt and to be honest not much bad weather either and is kept in a dry garage over winter.

Contacted Sargent a few days ago to be told someone would come back to me, which they didn't and rang them again today - still waiting for a call back so p*ss poor service now as well

All bike seats that have steel staples will get rust,metal gets condensation unless you have a heated/dehumidified garage.
I bet companies get inundated about silly things like that,the fact it's it's two years old & you have to remove it to see is it that bad remove them buy a staple gun if needs be.

Really, silly things like this and at a cost of £587.20 not including postage!! Guess for that amount they could not use better quality staples and screws? Several other parts of the bike are made from metal and none of that is rusting despite being in the same garage and conditions!!

Happy to compare against my Yamaha seat that has no rust at all and has "steel" staples

Even the p*ss poor screws that came with the fender extender aint rusting and they get the brunt of the weather

Salt is the likely cause. Councils slather it about at the slightest excuse of a cold snap. It sprays under the seat and ...

The best option is carefully clean the staples and rivet heads treat with rust converter and paint with zinc rich silver paint. Staple edges will be bare metal and plated rivets will have only been walked by the plating tanks.

mine didn't have rusty staples, but the screws definitely went very rusty, very quickly. i just dabbed them with acf50 and forgot all about it.

Same as on 3 yr old seat acf it and don't look again works for me

I had my Sargent's staples replaced with galvanised staples at my local bike seat upholsterer.
He would have used stainless staples, but they were prohibitively expensive.

After getting Sargent in the US involved it was agreed that they would send the fixings (staples and screws/washers etc) about 5 & 1/2 weeks ago to Calamander for them to collect the seat and apply the new parts and return them to me FOC - so far Calamander have not been in touch so no suprise there then
