Sat nav, one route there, another back?

Borrowed a Navman, suggested route from Eastleigh to Cullompton was along the coast, return was via the A303. Tad indecisive wouldn't you say. I hadn't altered any preferences regarding Motorways. Is this a common occurrance?

I seems common in most systems, When a route is plotted one of the criteria considered by the software are the ammount of right turns, as these are deemed to add more time than left turns to the total time ..I havn't tried "shortest route" option in both directions to test this though!!
