I agree, find a 2610, use openstreetmaps for the mapping and there you go. Does everything you actually need from a Sat Nav and if you must have music, telephone connection, tea making etc there are plenty of other ways to do that.
My personal preference these days is an iPhone in a suitable case (Ultimate Addons?) & with a power connection. Lots of choices for the routing software including Tomtom, Garmin & some very good free ones.
I am very happy with the Zumo 660, has bluetooth and an MP3 player, also have the cheap subscription free plug in traffic warning lead. I find it starts and recalculates quickly. I have it plugged into my Starcom intercom. Have a look at this forum GPS section.
Just an opinion, not a fact, Zumo devices are excellent units, you don't have to use the 'extras' (I don't), someone mentioned Open Street Maps?...nowhere near as good as Mapsource, plus you need an internet connection to get the best from it.
I use a simple car TomTom I got for £90 and a waterproof case a mate gave me. Does exactly what I need it to do and it's simple to use. It's not the 'best' but it's just what I need

what that old dinosaur, write directions on bog roll, unravel as you go along, Izal is the best model
The best would depend on what you want it to do, used Garmin Quest's are cheap, I have a zumo, that I bought sometime in 2007, modern ones are probably even easier to use

Yes my opinion that the 2610 does what I want at least as well as the later units, since it would be my money I would spend on a replacement unit I see no point.
The following is, however fact.
Mapsource is what you use to manage the maps, not the maps themselves,so I use Mapsource with both the latest Garmin maps and the openstreetmap ones. The O/S ones are better ,at least around here, more info on them and less errors in the mapping. Once downloaded to your PC?/laptop there is no further need of an internet connection just as with the Garmin maps
I use a Tom Tom Rider Pro. Used all over europe and I'm perfectly happy with it. Not used anything else mind and I'm not particularly interested in planning my routes in advance on my laptop as I'm not that sort of person.
Downloaded the Morocco map and used it over there fot 2 weeks earlier in the year. Of course it didn't have any piests (sp?) mapped (or only the major routes anyway) but was actually really good for finding hotels/petrol/you way around the big cities.
