Hi,I have the 2016 GS adventure TE model and it has a sat nav holder,does anybody know what sat nav will fit this as the bmw one is huge money.Im not too worried if the thumb wheel on the left of the handle bar is not compatable.
 
2nd hand ones on eBay or Zumo 660

Both fit, but the whizz wheel won't do anything.

BMW Nav V fits and is fully compatible with the bikes whizz wheel and systems
 
Go back to your dealer make a couple of complaints about the bike, they'll give you a Nav V

The wheel does offer some functionality with the Nav IV. It allows you to scroll through options, select them and zoom in on the map, if I remember correctly. I rarely use it though...

Ah ok, just tried mine with a Zumo 660 and it didn't do anything. Just assumed the Nav 4 would react the same.

Go for the Nav V, its excellent and the thumb wheel is so easy to use on the move.

A friend of mine ordered one on the net from Italy for about £500. Its exactly the
same as the UK model and arrived after about 3 days.

When you sell the bike, sell the Nav V separately, you should get a good return on it.
 
I was in the same position and just use my 660, fits perfectly in factory fit cradle.
 
I got one from a salesman at the dealership ,his personal nav, his new bike didn't need it , bargain!
Find them on eBay for around £400

I sold my 660 to get a Nav V, and the mates I ride with still have 660s. The 660 was better at routing. The Nav V does some very weird stuff like routing you through a lay-by, or taking you off an A road and down a single-track lane up a hill! When I did a lap of Ireland my Nav V got me into a number of scrapes by deciding it could save a few seconds by going down some mossy, gravelly back road. Last week in the highlands, my mates were constantly ribbing me about some of the minor routes by Nav V took us down when I was leading.

When I ride with my mates now, I ask over the intercom "Does your 660 say to turn here?" to avoid some daft roads. I wish I still had my 660.
 
I prefer my old 550 for some of the Functions , adjusting volume being a basic one!!

On my test rides on lc model with the thumb wheel fitted and Nav 5 unit I was constantly accidentaly changing the display, prefer the zumo 660 that I use on my own lc as it hasn't got this problem
 
Different routes.

I got my nav 5 free (?) with my bike. I thought it was a great bit of kit but some functions you will in reality never use.

I was one of three riders who did the 10 day pyrenees tour down loaded from the ride magazine. I was the only one with a nav 5. On many occasions my unit wanted to do a different route. Now that I didn't understand every body had the latest maps and the ride download was common to all the units.

Fortunately being the slowest rider I was able to follow the guys up front.

Incidentally I sold the free sat nav and the expensive R1200gs TE that came with it. Went back to a hex head, no electronic suspension, ABS. Happy, yes indeed and my old nav 3 now provides me with my instructions.
 
One of my riding mates speculated that the Nav V is able to detect that I'm on a GS, and therefore deliberately route me over some less-than-ideal terrain on the assumption that surely every GS rider would prefer to leave a smooth A road and take a slippery, rutted, single-track road instead. :D

It's true!

So far no issues with my Nav 5. I plan routes on Basecamp so assume if doing that it will override anything the satnav wants to do if you've got appropriate waypoints or via points.

Yes and no. Initially the route will be exactly as planned in Basecamp, including any avoidances etc. like "Residential roads". However, if for any reason you recalculate on the Nav V, it will then use its own logic which could then make the route slightly different to the original in Basecamp.
