Hi All,
Unfortunately with my limited skills on SatNav I am unable to make head nor tail of Garmin Base camp., and from what I hear I'm not the only one!
A mate of mine is recommending MyRoute-app which he subscribes to annually and reckons extremely user friendly. Also on internet search Calimoto comes up as being highly recommended, but I don't know anyone using it.
Could I kindly ask for some thoughts and recommendations please?
Best regards,
Jack

Hi Jack,

I have used all 3 "fairly" extensively. They all have their quirks, To be honest Wapping is the best person to comment on Basecamp. I consider myself very IT/tech savvy and I struggled a bit at first with Basecamp. In the end I made my routes in MyRoute app and then imported them into Basecamp however there are some caveats to that that I won't go into too much detail right now.

Calimoto is a great app, it's up and coming and the website is pretty simple. Again there are quirks but I recently used Calimoto pretty much exclusively for a 12 day Alps trip and generally speaking it didn't miss a beat.

Basecamp WILL do what you want, but you do need to invest the time to learn it. I agree it's not an app you can just pick up and use and let it take care of everything, YOU have to make it work for you, but when it does it's great.

Happy to go into more detail but if you just want a quick "get me from here to here via a windy route" without having to put too much thought in, Calimoto is definitely a good option.

Wapping to the GPS Help Desk, toute suite

Bemused Caller on Line 1

I have moved his identical post from Travel into the the GPS section. The 1200 chimps can deal with this one, it’ll make a change from lean angles and what gloves to wear.

I used to use TYRE but missed the boat when it changed to MyRoute app so turned to Basecamp.
I struggled with it until I found this https://youtu.be/rq3P-AtB45A you need to set up the nav and computer to have the same maps and settings as he explains. In the main since following this it's worked well but I need to use it more to take it all in.
Good luck.

I use myroutes, easy enough to use and if you are sharing your route with a Tomtom user it will allow you to compare and manipulate so that you both follow the same roads.

Well worth the subscription

Have a look at this. I’ve found his tutorials very helpful.

Basecamp is not at all easy to use, unless you've watched some tutorials, and even then, the interface is quite clunky compared to other tools. I persevered with it, and I can now do pretty much what I want, but it still surprises me from time to time. Agreed that having the map installed on your PC is key to making it useable. And anyway, at least it's free!

I am a tom tom fan boy on your phone.

£12.99 a year. you can import and create routes via the the tom tom website if using android.

Interface and mapping just been updated and it is ace. Free demo is available.

Used a Garmin 395 last week on scottish trip (using wappings routes he created) but resorted to my tom tom on the Samsung s9 to find hotels etc direct from the booking.com app
