Saturday 6 Jul 2013 Kilburn Grasstrack Hill Climb

In case anyone interested - could be a bit of fun, not like the 'real' ones abroad, but interesting enough.

Only details I can find :-

Practice from 13.30; competition starts 15.00.Organised by Pickering & District Motor Club. Admission £6 per adult, £1 per child.

The hill I've seen before is just past the bottom of White Horse Bank on way to switchbacks on way to Oldstead

Part of Kilburn Feast w/e....nice (ahem ) 7 mile road race...running on Sunday if you want to make a w/e of it

Damn! I have a family thing on Saturday afternoon & that looks great fun to watch!
Can highly recommend the cafe at the Gliding Club at Kilburn - went there on Saturday & it's lovely to see the gliders over a slice of tiffin!
Oh! I just noticed you said it's on Sunday too.....

Also bear in mind cafe at Ampleforth College is excellent too http://www.hpo.ampleforth.org.uk/tea-room - ironically haven't tried the gliding club one yet http://www.ygc.co.uk/catering.php, bloody locals eh

Elle - don't make mistake of turning up Sunday, no hill climb as far as I know - it's a 7 mile run by legs on the roads round Kilburn...not as exciting to watch - I know, I know some of the people in it It's bloody hilly though not the same thing at all

Will write up tomorrow should I survive the to be very warm 7 mile run (using legs ) in a couple of hours time

But it was a great fun afternoon at the hillclimb, many more pics later - sadly no GS content....but there is a large road 750 to look forward too

A grand (and very warm) afternoon courtesy of Pickering and District Motor Club.

Very 'relaxed' organisation, don't think we got going until near 4, and it was near 7 by end good value for a fiver entrance tho

Two courses, fork left for easier - but still tricky, or right for steepening to a vertical lip. You can see a couple struggling up the steep one to get an indication of how steep it was.

There seemed to be a lot of practice, then run offs, first one up of pairs took on next, knock out type of thing.

Classes were set up, there were trials bikes, MX bikes, grass track bikes and even a road bike

Nice little hump past the top on route down gave a good opportunity to get a action shot with the White Horse behind!

YES...there was a whole 'one' modern intersting bike in the line up...an Africa Twin shod with MX tyres.

Undoubtably there are people on here that could get up the easier track in these conditions - I would love to have seen some GSs up there, the r100 might do it if there are MX tires that size, TCKs woudln't be enough hmmmm..

In the comp the run offs had a couple of interesting old bikes - think the nearside is as old as the club itself - 1923?

And so to the harder one (no way the previous bikes could crest this one without substantial modification). Trials bikes made it up (in fifth!), but otherwise all MX and enduro's. Shows how good bikes are these days, it wasn't that hard for the modern bikes at all (he says )

No 14 won my award for ear splitting noise - good old two stroke

I was busy trying to get shots at top, rather than past top, but this fella definately won the Superman award, as in he ended up back flipping his bike, then somehow ended up on floor before the bike...with it on top of him survived it, and a lady next to me caught the action, I didn't.


I wouldn't recommend doing that with a GS...crushed to death

There is talk of another event up in the Dales one evening in August, if I find out more I'll let you know...get you MX tires ordered and get the hacksaw and welder out

You can get a day ticket for (I think) around £35 and membership at about £8 for a year - that's what I was told anyway. The guys here had loads of runs as practice, and some free time at end too so not a high cost to ruin your body and bike

Some tips here, saw the 2001 event at Arette after a cycle race, sheer madness! As a spectator is you slip you'll end up right down the hills, tis crazy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RSISQ313Yc on in a few days time if you are in the pyrenees

And yes, the run yesterday was bloody hot - thanks to the locals en route with their housepipes and sprayers

thanks for sharing those pics, it looked a great event to watch
I rode a CRF250X a few weekends ago which has a lot of power - in fact, a bit scary for a 250 - made my Serow seem like a childs electric toy!
I'll look out for the August event.
