Save me from my endless wanderings through light hell?

After careful negotiations with my better half I have managed to convince her that it essential (using the usual "road safety/responsible rider" ruse) that I get some new ultra bright lights for my 2007 R1200GS for my Birthday.

So as not to arouse the ire of the big lads on the Board I have tried to do my research on the Board.

In short I am bewildered to say the least.

BTBR seemed to be the lighting God and I was all set to ring him but he seems to be in the process of a conversion to HID and I'm not sure where he stands at the moment.

Les Wassall seems something of a lighting guru but I'm not sure where he lives and whether he could help me.

My dealer has confused me even more by recommending a kit for headlight conversion which I have to buy and they will fit for me.

Another mechanic at my dealer recommended the touratech lights with one hid main beam and one normal fog light.

The PIAA HID set from Nippy's looks cool but pricey and I can't say I'm confident about fitting them.

What is the very latest recieved wisdom on the best/cost effective set up and where could I get it done?

Could someone please put me out of my lighting misery otherwise I might spend it all on jazz CD's.

Les Wassell lives in congleton, north of stoke on trent, he's helped me out a couple of times, and he's a really great guy. He doesn't charge megabucks to supply and fit the lights. You could do a hell of a lot worst
 
HID`s

Well, you could use Les or Alan (BTBR) to fit lights or you could do it yourself.

If you want an extra light bar with spots/fogs by all means use the above mentioned gentleman. Alan does a brilliant job and is very thorough and I guess Les would be the same. Or if you want to convert your standard lights to HID, buy a kit and do the conversion. It`s really simple and any idiot can do it (I know, I did it myself).:augie:augie

The great thing about HID`s is you can convert back to standard in 5 mins and the HID light is unbelievable. It`s the best single thing you can do to a GS IMHO.

If it`s any help, I can get an HID kit for £70 and help you fit it. It really is only an hour max to do the job:thumb
 
I've got HID on dipped (did it myself, VERY easy) and a BTBR spots and running lights job (very professionally done and great (veggie) sausage sarnies) :thumb2

Bang per buck go for HIDs, no question - I'm just greedy having both :D

IMHO there are "fors" and "againsts" for both types of extra lighting, ie HIDs or having extra lights.

Only you can make your mind up which one to go with, but that will involve searching the forum so that you make your choice.

But if you want HIDs then Les is the man to see.

But whatever you do, dont get your dealer to fit them!!!!
 
Could someone post a link to the kits that convert the standard lights to HID. I have had a look but can't seem to find one.
 
The only problem I've noticed with my HID50s is the 5-30 second warm up (to full brightness) delay at switch on. Not an issue on the dipped light but could be on the main. That is if the lamp has been off for a few minutes, you'll have a 30 second delay before full phaser power. That delay reduces as the off time reduces.:eek
If you just flick the main beam off for a few seconds and then on again the delay is not to noticeable. That said the minimum brightness at switch on is about 20% of full power, so your not in total darkness at any time. Also the beam vibrates very slightly over the bumps(more than the filament lamp).
Apart from that IMHO it's probably the best\cheapest improvement you'll make on the GS.:rob
