Hello there,

Does anyone know if it is possible to save a mapsource gdb file in an older version? I've been mailed a file for a trip and I can't open it as it's in a new format. I'm running version 6.11.6 (I'm thinking this is version 2 format?)

Also I suppose now I'm in the dark ages I'd better update at some point- I'm running a Zumo 550 which I've had a couple of years now. I know that Garmin have a plug-the-unit in and it'll find updates, has anyone used that from a map perspective?

Thoughts appreciated,

Thanks

In theory you can update Mapsource for free if you wanted to.

I say "in theory" as I've not been able to update it on my laptop for ages - it must be over a year ago by now. Its worked for other, but for reason it won't let me do it. :( I've heard some people say that the latest version isn't an improvement, but you know what its like, I just assume the latest version has some useful little updates in it.

MyGarmin should be able to see what updates there are for the maps if your logged in and the gps is plugged into the usb port.

IIRC mapsource will give options on what to save the file as, ie gpx, gbd and the older ones too as a drop down when you go to file - save as. Used to use this feature when working out routes on my PC for the ma-in-law and her mapsource was quite a bit older than mine.

Thanks guys- so if I update via the unit do I get a new version of mapsource and the maps on the Zumo too? I'm taking it they're hand in hand..

Cheers again,

No, Mapsource updating is separate to map updating. Mapsource updates are free, map updates cost £. Think of it like this; Mapsource = Word, Garmin mapping - Word document. Not a great analogy but fundamentally Mapsource is the application and the mapping is the data that the application works with.

Later versions of Mapsource can save in V2 GDB format rather than V3 which is the latest format. You just need to use 'Save as' in the file menu and select V2 GDB from the drop down menu in the file save dialogue.
