S/H shockers

Thanks for sharing...last shock I bought (with a view to replacing the rusty old Hargon one on mine) off e-bay leaked within a few miles - it was, apparently, fine when the last geezer sent it off. It was an old original shock. I now realise these are crap. Spect I'll save up and buy a new replacement.

Thanks Desmo2 - I was only bidder at GBP100-, and the vendor has kindly offered to post it to Oz too, although I could have provided a local delivery address.

Last Ohlins I bought on Ebay was one for my R100 GS, and it was perfect and almost unused, just a long way out of adjustment, but in any event a full service/regas/ new fluid will cost me around $ 90- plus any seals, etc.

So hopefully I will end up around $300- for a just serviced Ohlins- the Oz importer wants almost $2000- for them so buying locally isn't an option.

Finally managed to remove the spring, give it a rattle can paint job with the yellow for the B44VS tank and get it fitted to the G/S.

It had a, err, home made spring, cut down out of something long and light, and I decided to fit the shock to see if the spring was right for my 90 kg( dry) , before having the shock re gassed/serviced.

Checked the damping while the spring was off, felt as good as new, and like every Ohlins I have had the adjuster sets both the compression and rebound - someone should tell the guy who writes the manual s for Ohlins !

At the POs settings it was better than my recently serviced WP, with much better damping allowing the use of a softer spring.

1 mm more preload and a couple of clicks less damping and it is just about perfect, but to be fair to the WP it had a heavy spring set for a full load of RTW style luggage.

But of course it now requires the front softened a little too - anyone know which of the aftermarket springs are softest, and work with a #70/ 400 lb ish spring ?

Before heading out to spend money, have a think about these possible solutions.

Firstly: Have a play with the damping settings if there are any (though I think they're preset with no adjusters).

Secondly: Have a look inside you front shocks. There's usually a preload spacer at the top (metal tube) cut a bit off to reduce the spring tension. Might be worth buying some tubing for experimentation purposes though, just in case you get it wrong first time.

Thirdly: Change the fork oil for a lighter grade.

Any of these will make the front softer pretty much for free.
