Say goodbye to Windoze Genuine Advantage woes FOREVER!

ok, it's true my PCs are festooned with wires, but why won't the only accessible USB socket on the imac power an ipod?

incidentally, most PCs i see have USB sockets on the front of the box, you don't have to go round the back (always).

you mac types are very defensive/touchy aren't you :P

I think you'd have to look quite hard to find a PC box without USB on the front or easily accesible nowadays.

Mine's got 6 on the back, plus two more on the front.....it makes sense having a couple on the back 'cos you're not going to be wanting to unplug your printer, scanner, webcam etc....they stay attached :nenau

I've also got an 8 port hub under my monitor as well.....

The Mac smugness should be fast disappearing anyway (unless in true Mac owner style they've got their eyes closed) 'cos there are more and more viruses appearing for them- if you haven't got AV software, you should get some ;)

Until Macs can fully run all windows apps (Inc GPS software) and games, they remain the toys of those who like the fashion and what they see as one-upmanship :dabone

PS you pay a big premium as well.....I can go into any computer shop and buy any hard drive and not worry about it, whilst you have a much smaller range of kit and it's overpriced because of it ;)

And Vista has quite a lot of the on-screen bells and whistles of the Mac OS, and seems to find hardware drivers without needing driver disks (if Microsoft have them on their website). Quite a lot of bloatware in it though, but no hyperterminal.

Cookie, the Apple keyboard USB ports are designed for low power devices like mice or USB Flash Drives.

The hub in the keyboard is non powered and takes it's power from a single USB port on the computer and splits it in 3 (1/3 for the keyboard and 1/3 each for both USB ports). This was done because no keyboard ever needs the full power from a USB port, so most keyboards take up a USB port on the computer but waste 2/3 of the power. Apple decided to put USB ports on the keyboard to utilise this 'wasted' power.

Not touchy, but get frustrated some times with blinkered computer users (not aimed at you :) ). I frequently advise folk who have windows problems to move to Mac as I have worked in windows support for quite a few years so I feel qualified in my opinion that Mac OS is so much better for the vast majority of users than windows. It's not perfect by any means, but compared to windows, it's streets ahead.

I find that most people who slag off Apple have never used a Mac in anger. They wobble a mouse about in the shop and take an instant dislike as it's a bit different. I don't know anyone who has moved back to windows after using a Mac for any length of time.

Not so. Macs use the same hard drives and the same IDE connectors as windows boxes.

oops. that's me then  :)

Correct. I paid £250 for my immaculate iMac, with all the bells and whistles and software (inc Office for Mac (completely compatible with PC), DVD writer, wireless etc, and what little other sortware I've wanted since I have got free download from Mac/free/shareware. Oh, and I can do all my Garmin GPS stuff with it too. And all my music. And iPod. And MPs payer. And pictures. And video - to DVD. I got a massive external drive for all that for exactly the same price as PC one - coz it it a PC one. It's never cashed or gone wrong in any way. No virus ever, not even running anti-software. And it sits in a tiny space on my bureau where a lamp used to be, with it's fantasticaly adjustable flat screen popping up and down as and when I need it.

I must admit that one cable plugged into the wall is a pain though, as it that little USB mini hub that sits next to it and plugs in the back, next to the two other USB ports (not the two on the keyboard - I use those for my MP3 player and memory stick) and the firewire port.

What a rip-off the whole thing is eh?

I've used Macs and PC's side by side for years and still do every day. Before OSX came out - I would have put myself in the Mac camp. Now though, I slightly prefer PC's although there's not a lot in it TBH. A well-looked after PC will be as stable as you like, more so than an equivalent mac in my experience. UI-wise, again there is not much in it although I find the Mac OS whilst looking prettier, is more irritating to use than a PC. Oh, and you pay through the nose for Macs - PC's are cheaper!

One thing is for sure though, the Mac vs PC argument will rumble on forever :thumb

Which mac game can I play that lets me drive a T34 in berlin in 1945 blowing up everything in sight ???

Does it have an "all weapons" and "never die" cheat code

Windows does beat Mac hands down for gaming. If you want a computer for gaming stick with a windows box.

No idea about games due to getting Life v1.1 before I got a 'pooter.

Mac's never crash - dream on

two of my colleagues use Mac - one, a graphics designer and the other a photographer. Neither were computer literate, and aren't, and felt compelled to use Mac's are the computer of choice for the print industry.
To date, they have killed 3 Mac's and as many hard drives.

For 5 years, I've one PC which I use for Office, email, video editing, audio editing, picture editing - upgrade from '95 to XP, more memory, additional hard drive. Crashes, yes, but mostly lousy software related than Windows.

Mac's aren't perfect, they're expensive to buy, expensive to maintain and no longer have the exclusive software which was the compelling reason that you had to buy a Mac.

When they work, they are no different to any other PC. When they don't, there require specialist support - a bit like oilheads or 1200s.

Can anyone who's used this please let me know how they got on? It worked great for me.

I tried this utility on a "test" PC yesterday and it failed. I get a notice informing me that Windoze XP needs to be registered within 30 days. If I try to register it, the MicroSuck utility says that the registration failed. :nenau
