hiya all, ive been looking at the scala bluetooth intercoms lately and was considering fitting them to a pair of shoei hornets(me and the wifes:bow), but i aint sure whether they will work with this style of helmet???, so i was wondering whether any one out there had done this atall??ifso got any tips or piccys???, as im concerned at how the actual unit will sit on the side of the helmet also whether the mic will bend up into the mouth area comfortably and still look neat in the process:confused:, also i would like to hear some feedback about the speakers, are they they the same size as say autocoms versions, in the pictures they appear to look smaller and thinner, which is what i would prefer:D

any help appreciated:thumb

When I looked at the scala v sena I didn't want either of them with the silly boom wrapping around the side of the helmet. Then I saw that there was the option to get a separate mounting plate for the sena that enabled you to have a remote mike. The kit comes with a boom and wired mike and combined with both a glue and clamp plate pretty much gives the option to have a clean mount to any helmet.

There are plenty of reviews on the pros and cons of the 2 systems but unless you want to talk to more than 3 other people most rate the sena over the scala for ease of use and the various mounting options.

Not sure if relevant, but when I mount my Scala G4 to my Shoei X-spirit (using the clamp) - pulling the helmet on and off is painful (on that side) when using in-ear speakers.

Seems like the fit of the Shoei is tighter in that area than my other helmets.

intresting:cool, so with the wired remote mic, does it just stick somewhere in the front of your helmet??, or is it similar to the autocom version and is sort of small and on a bendy strip of metal??, if that makes sense:blast, either way sounds neater:thumb, anybody know how the sena earphones compare to autocoms earphones?? are they any smaller or thinner????

The wired mic is quite small and simply fits onto the chin piece with velcro. I've fitted one to my wife's helmet, she hated the old autocom boom but doesn't even notice the sena wired mic

The speakers on the smh10 are more substantial than autocom ones and IMHO are much better quality, particularly if they are fitted into a recess as this seems to amplify the sound. If you're worried about size the smh5 has smaller speakers but they are not as good quality. If you don't have a lot of room in your helmet you could always use a soldering iron to create a recess in the inner shell, just shaving off a few mm can make a big difference

The default setting on the sena is Vox off which I prefer, you simply tap the dial to initiate the intercom and the channel which is duplex stays open until you manually turn it off. On our old autocom we used to get loads of false vox activations due to my wife not liking the mic to be too close to her mouth or me singing!

I got mine from adventure bike shop, give them a bell, they are very knowledgeable and stock the entire sena range

cheers for that mate, i was planning on ringing the adventure bike shop toady, but just didnt get chance:blast, i take on board what you say about the speakers etc., i love my shoei hornet, but i dont think it was designed to take a headset etc:blast, i tried the autocom version, the mic was fine but the speakers were fooookin murder on me lugs:eek:, the helmet has the recess, but its exactly that, a cutout in the cheek pad, but its a hollow cutout against the side of the helmet shell, so you couldnt move the speakers away from the sides of your ears if you wanted to:blast, which is why i ask about speaker sizes on the sena

tell me if im wrong, but there doesnt appear to be a massive difrence between the smh5 and the smh10 from what i can see, so is it worth the extra money????

Is it worth the money?
Depends on what you want to use it for
If you only want to talk to your pillion and are not too fussed about music quality the 5 will do you. It's a smaller package than the 10 as well.
I wanted to be able to user in ear speakers and for that you need the 10. Our compromise was I bought a 10 with the remote boom and in ear plate and my wife has a 5 (she doesn't like listening to music). Works well for us.
I have an iphone5 and the way it integrates with the phone is a revelation. With the latest firmware the 10 will pair with a stand alone gps like the Zumo, integrate fully with your phone and talk with your pillion.

I hade a scala G4 for work for a few months, functionally it's the same as the sena but I find the sena far easier to use. Battery life is frankly astonishing, used daily on about an hour and a halfs commute 3-4 x a week I'm going 3-4 weeks between charging and I'm listening to music all that time.

I hope so, just bought a pair of the smh10! Fitted one of them to my Shark evoline which being s flip top requires the boom mic. Might get the wired mic to fit to the arai. But they also do a mount that allows the use of your own earbuds.

so are you saying that the 10 will "multi connect" the bluetooth ie, my zumo, phone and intercom all at the same time, but the 5 wont???, its either intercom or zumo??? if that makes sense!

No, they don't all work at the same time, the unit prioritises input, what I mean is that all these devices integrate seamlessly, in the past, particularly with the iPhone the connection would drop off if another device connected. This may work the same with the 5 but my understanding is only the latest firmware on the 10 will allow you do do this, again speak to adventure bike shop, they will know. I'm sure they will have fitted both types to a hornet as well.

just a bit of a thread update really, went with the smh5's in the end, after speaking with you guys and the adventure bike shop seemed like the best solution, ordered on the Friday and arrived on the Saturday morning, so top marks to the adventure bike shop:thumb, got em fitted to the helmets and ive gotta say im really chuffed:D, the fit is bang on, the speakers are just right and the sound quality is awesome compared with autocom:augie, just one last thing though whats the correct sequence in which to connect to your mobile with the sena's, ive had it connected once no problems, but now im buggered if I can do it again, I know im doin somat wrong:blast

cheers lads:thumby:
