Have you a box of cables with one of these in it? MIL has an old DVD player with just a SCART out but TV needs HDMI in. I can get one online, but if you have one knocking around please let me know - thanks.

scart is analog and HDMI is digital

if you could find a scart to composite (Y/C) or S-video the you could turn that into a digital signal...

but it would be simpler to throw the DVD player away, and buy one with a HDMI output

Thanks, and of course easier to update DVD, but it is hardly used. I have just looked in my old box of cables, well you never know, but nothing bridges the old and new eg Scart to HDMI.

well there is, I have an interface that's analog in digital out but when I bought it it was a grand...

you could probably find something on amazon that's a capture card, but not much to be a converter to a telly...

I bought a scart to hdmi converter for the same reason as you require from eBay about 6 years ago. It was less than ten quid.
Can't find a link but it worked perfectly.

Pretty much the same as this

Thank you Sir (y) Good to know it worked for you.

wonder how that would get round HDCP (high definition copy protection)

suppose as it's analog and then uses an upscaler from an interlaced signal to a progressive one that would probably do it... might have to buy one just see what inside it... no wonder the TV anf film industry is screwed....

I have wondered if the DVD has had its copyright protection hacked by the sellers even. If it looks so I might even try to convert it in say VLC, put it on a USB stick and try that in the TV. But easier to buy one of those converter thingys.

DVD players are incredibly cheap.
It would be way easier/better to just get a cheap one with HDMI output than rely on that 4 quid box to be honest.

A lot of later DVD players are (thank god) region free.

the whole minefield of copy protection is a really interesting topic.... some DVD"s and BluRay players have a handhsake protocol so they seeking from the connection to the telly a confirmation "yes I'm a telly, model number etc." and then they'll play

the "durty thieves" what they do is for criminality, so they tend to use the code of the lowest spec TV which is crackable and use that as the return feed, which is ok until that list is updated...

Yep.

Also, the HDMI handshake can lead to unpredictable results, like screen flashing and all that crap. Easily avoidable for 20/30 quid.

there's that an,d the maths is outstanding... frame rates and bit rates can vary there's variable packet transfer issues

most dvd's are 30fps but UK tv's are 25fps and some of the maths actually calculates it to being 29.54fps...

and a £5 device is gonna sort all that out..?

As I said I fitted the converter above and it sends the dvd picture from my old dvd player to my Sony TV perfectly.
I think that's all the op was after.
Most of what everyone else has posted means absolutely bugger all to me 🤔😁
