Having not waited long enough for the oil to settle after a service ( be gentle this is my first BMW) i reckon i have put about 250ml too much oil in

is a problem or can i just leave the engine to use it ???

I would not worry about 250ml but you could just undo the oil filter and pour the oil out if it makes you feel better!

the sight window can appear random based on engine temp and viscosity used my later one takes eons to behave.... when I did a change I put in 3.5 litres it was below the window, added 200ml ran it up waited it got to lower than min, did a 5 mile ride waiting 10 mins was just over midway - tipped another 200 ml in and next day its just above midway - so put the rest of a 4 litre bottle in now it looks over filled...

on a K1600 if its 200ml below the 4 litres they take - the fan runs almost continuously, top it up and they don't overheat - its hard to fathom they build them so badly

My 2011 TC was serviced by an Indy place,

Oil level way over sight glass -

3 months later running down to Sids, its showing a quarter on the sight glass

By the time I'm home, the sight glass covered again

So i did my own oil change - 4L inc filter as described, and it;s over the top of the sight glass

As other have said, it can vary wildly

Best i ever saw was a young lad down the road, came to see me once, he'd topped up his oil on his first car..

but it was smoking good an proper ....

I pulled his dipstick, black oil to the halfway mark, then nice clear oil right up the dipstick

Turns Out - 5L fresh 10/40 into a already filled engine ... oh dear

We did an oil change the next day ...

The oil cooler holds oil if the thermostat is closed, so the engine needs to be up to operating temperature before all of the oil will drain back.
If the engine is run cool and then switched off the oil will not drain down from the oil cooler and the level looks low.
Always check the level after a hot engine has stood for a few minutes with the bike vertical.

I did the same once a few years back. I just ran it like that. A few hundred miles and it smoked a little now and then and sometimes on start up.
Once it had burnt off the extra oil it was fine.

thanks for all the answers - im off to morocco in 10 days so might just leave it :0) im sure it will be gone by the time i get back

The usual worst case of overfilling by this much (a lot) is a blown seal. I'm sure you would like to de-risk your trip?

Like already mentioned, make sure the reading is taken with a hot engine (for the cooler), centre stand on level ground, after a 5-min settle time.

I think I'm with your thinking on this one

Off to Morocco on this same bike? I'd be inclined to get it all as it should be before you left... It's just a case of draining a little oil - I'd do it from the drain plug (of course with a glove on). It's much easier to clean up after compared to the loosening the oil filter...

..or use a syringe and tube and suck some out through the filler hole. Easy enough.

On a long trip, things like this can play on your mind.

I find trips more enjoyable if I know everything's 100%. That way I can focus my worries on the weather, navigation, ferry times, unclear accommodation bookings.... :-)

Yep. You can gently loose the bolt on the oil circuit below the engine to let some oil drain away. Same side of the sight glass, so you can keep an eye on the level.
Enjoy the warm oil coming out :D
