Schtum and Earache ride West - 2011

You'll have to get over and take a cross USA trip with us - do it once or twice a year, so just yell when you're ready to come along. I'm heading back out June 28 through July 8, 2012.

Mike's a great guy. This trip was a bit of a whirlwind as we only had 8-9 days to do it in. That meant 3 or 4 700 miles plus days. Lots of Euro's aren't used to doing that kind of mileage on successive days but Mike hung in there even in the 105F temps across the midwest. I'm used to that kind of heat and even I was bitchin' about it.:D But we had big miles to covrer and not a lot of time to do it in.

Might have to take you up on that Earache ... I've ridden with Mike a time or two, a great rider, very smooth and quick, would ride with him anytime/anywhere :thumb

Sirs are much too kind....:blush

Actually, riding a bike and driving a car are pretty much the only things I do quickly these days. The rest is a bit like swimming through treacle...:(

Shetland next May, Mick....?

It depends from where, Symon. The major population centres will mostly have bike rental places. If you're planning on the West Coast, I can thoroughly recommend Dubbelju in San Franciso. I've rented GSes on a couple of occasions from them and wouldn't hesitate to do so again.

Yup - with the west having more of them than the east. HD's are available damned near everywhere, but not sport touring bikes.
There's a place or two in NYC that have them and also in the Carolinas, Denver and I can get a few here in Indy. Rest of them are west coast.

Costs will run ya about $150-200 per day, unlimited miles and insurance cover included.

Thank you for that gentlemen
that seems to be a fair enough price .
Never really considered the idea before but i just bought a flight Scotland to to san francisco return not so expensive as i thought so game on at some point i recon
touring europe is good but it aint that big in the grand scheme of things so a wee change could be good :beerjug:

If you need advice on San Francisco and routes in the Bay Area and beyond, get in touch Symon. I might be able to persuade a friend of mine, in San Jose, who rides a GS to show you around a wee bit.

Thanks for pointing out that this photo is of Independence Pass.

Out of interest, I don't suppose you have any idea of the height of the pass do you?

:D

Great ride report. :clap

Loads of old mining roads around Ouray to ride into the hills on...
IMG_6644.jpg

We have free day in Ouray at the beginning of June and have considered hiring a jeep to drive some of these roads - I'm assuming an R1200RT isn't suitable :P

Right around 12,000' I think - pass is located between Twin Lakes and Aspen, CO.

Unless Robin is blind, Eric......I think he was attempting some kind of humo(u)r. :blast

Ok....blind it is then......:thumb

I hired a Jeep one day and drove over Imogene Pass and some others - will dig for the pictures of it if possible.
Not suitable for most GS's either!

Enjoyed the report & great photo's. Inspirational stuff, just the thing for these cold winter nights.
Thanks for posting :clap:clap:clap

Earache, too bad you are not going to be out there earlier. I plan to be around that area the last two weeks of June then up to Cody, Wy to look at my land in Clark, Wy.
What was the place that you stayed in Torry, UT and what were the rates? What were the rates like in Gateway, CO. I went through there last June but stayed in Grand Junction, CO.

David

I enjoyed the pictures I hope Schtum posts his pictures. I didn't take any pictures this past year when I rode the same area.

Great report.

David
