Friday 12th August

Julie and I have planned a 2 week trip to Europe.
Our rough route is Rotterdam to Namur in Belgium for 2 nights, onto Trier then Vosges to Colmar for 2 days,Schiltach in Black Forest,Sindelfingen and Stuttgart for 3 days with Friends, then up to Rothenburg for a day/ night. We then head for Hann Munden before riding over to the Harz mountains looping back to Paderborn,Arnhem and Rotterdam for the Ferry home. We have a mix of accomodation most pre booked for the bigger places. 197 miles being the longest run over the 15 days . Weather looks promising.

Everything ready to go, panniers packed , tankbag and map in case ,routes done, hoping to be off by 14.30 pm , Julie still working finishing at 13.40 pm - tic follows toc.

Green Light 14.15pm bikes out onto the road, my panniers on,tank bag on , satnav on, fetch Julies panniers and they wont clip in place ,now thats odd. Had the frames powder coated, after much trying twas clear it wasnt happening. There are many gifts in there for friends in Germany , I can see that Julie is heading for a meltdown ,we repack into her rollbag and my panniers, getting very warm in all the gear. Finally getting underway, ½ a mile from home I realise the pannier fastenings are upside down oops. Dont mention it to the Mrs until we get to the Ferry Terminal. We hold everyone up for 35 mins as they want to charge us an extra £85, a few phone calls later all is sorted. Set off and get pulled into customs for a search, like a Monty Pythons Sketch
“Always look on the bright side of life!”

Onto the Ferry at last,we get settled in and retire to the top deck to see the Sunset

Arriving in Rotterdam to bright sunshine, the day ahead looks good.

A little assistance required

We disembark and set off on the first leg of our journey to Namur in Belgium for 2 days.

We arrive in good time at the central ibis, easy to find and well located, the aircon is on ahhhhhhhh

So we go out to walk the citadel 4.5miles and its 29 deg C

Apparently a large Turtle has moved into the Citadel. There are Polar Bears on the Lock too almost like AnkMorpark? Terry Pratchet

A few pictures from the citadel.

Having earned a beer we call in for tea,

Tomorrow we will walk the city and towpaths and maybe take a boat trip.

Polar Bears , who knows I googled but no joy
Todays adventure in the Sun 6.5 miles perusing the lovely Namur

Local Folk

We had heard of the Goosestep but not the Cock

Namur Centre

Early morning walk by the river

We do a riverboat trip and its time to pack for our run to Trier.

Trier to follow

We have another Ibis booked in Trier centre easy to find and ideally situated. If you listen to instructions from reception staff it is out the main door straight into the plaza. However we chose to half listen and follow a city guide the wrong way at the start. Well it was hot and Julie is an ace navigator. We got to see the Mosel and Karl Marx House, then stumbled into the soho area . For research purposes I offered to check these places out but Julie says that our limited funds dont stretch that far.

We regroup and have a pitstop and get the map out. I find my glasses and it transpires that we have been following city guide 2 not the highlighted main event. So it appears that Trier may well be less of a shithole and we move on back on track. 32 deg C in the shade.

There are loads of expensive shops but thats not what we want to see. A few random pictures and a food one or two for Rick and Bear if I can sort through the photos as they have uploaded in a random ish fashion.

Spotted this and what a beauty

I see no ships

Even the manhole covers are posh, wouldnt last 5 mins in Sheffield, some thieving scrap man would have it away

Tree of life,beautiful craftmanship

Some bloke killing a squirrel to save Trier

Now this one caught my eye . I would like to think that the random guy in green stage right would fit quite nicely in the red bubble car.

The Porta Nigra 3rd floor apparently added later by some rich bloke. The main structure was built without mortar. Clever blokes them Romans.

Just in case the old one gets blown over here is the Mercedes Dealership backup plan

With Nellie to guard it

Here is a picture of a church one of the many

One for the Harry Potter Fans

The churches are all so well maintained, the sums of money involved beggars belief. I prefer a more humble church ,simple and plain, let the people keep the brass.

The door handle doesnt agree with the above statement plenty people using this one

We decide to eat out early as we have trudged about in another 32 deg C
Pizza for the Mrs and a chicken salad I believe NO Chips

Last Trier pics before we prepare to travel the Vosges to Colmar for 2 days.

Cracking pictures Andrew....

Up early and excited about our run down to Colmar through the Vosges. We are packed, breakfasted, fuelled and raring to go at 7.30am. After a faff about with the parking barrier and the twatnav trying to take us to the motorway we finally get underway, already 23 deg C.

This image springs to mind as I conjure up images of the Vosges Grande Ballon

Lovely day mid 30 deg C so carrying lots of water and have lots of photo stops . Just fantastic re doing these roads with more time to spare.

A few pics of the roads and scenery

What a grand day out, the roads were all good and nearly traffic free, easy to get into the riding groove . Must revisit the area again, utterly brilliant. The weather really helped. We ride on to Colmar arriving early afternoon .

Quick shower and wander into the Centre to find our bearings,we have a full day to explore tomorrow.

Just a little one , now that hit the spot

More from Colmar tomorrow:D

Colmar is a lovely place, we have a map and intend to see all the sights today. Hopefully a boat trip too. We are up and into Town early , weather is excellent

We get up early to make the most of the day and amble into Colmar from the Ibis Centre a short walk. We come across this and again a creature from Terry Pratchett novels perhaps. Forget that can you imagine the bin liner sized Poo bag they must carry.

Approaching Tourist Information we come across this fountain with one of the guests having a morning shower …. Its gonna be another hot one !

The buildings and roofing are excellent everywhere you look. The signs drawing your attention to who sells what. Early so all the shops are opening and setting up. So I can not offer you smelly vision but heres some Food Pictures.

Street Performers livening up the atmosphere

Stork nests

The interesting buildings

Back of the old market

The inside of the Market is buzzing with life and very clean

Selling some interesting foods

Time for refreshment

Whilst at the side of the river we encounter a copyu swimming around one of the restraunts,
I wonder whether it is remote controlled to pull in the punters (CYNIC)

Then this confirms it another Wind Up toy, meh Just not as well made

OOOOOH boat trip

Loved up couple dreaming of a boat trip

Oh so brief returning to dock

We stop for The` and tiffin to re energise before photographing our way around the lovely Colmar.
What a relaxed and chilled out place it is the 36 deg C helps.

We dine alfresco from the Supermarche` in the evening to keep costs down. Once back at base we plot a route to Schiltach about half way between Colmar and our 3 days with Friends in Sindelfingen. Booked a little hotel by the river called Zur Alten Brucke. Cross country bimble tomorrow. Back on the road.

Our route takes some little back roads and villages, not long after setting off we come across a field with the elusive Stork in,they are a long way off but managed to `Twitch` a photo of this lovely bird.
Ooooooh a tractor too my day is off to a good start.

We pass through Marckolsheim and locate a memorial on the Maginot line , Musee Memorial de la Ligne Maginot du Rhin Marckolsheim Sud .Sadly no pictures as we had an interloper on the lens and didnt notice the squashed fly till our next stop. Camera cleaned we snap away at the next stop.

Impressive engineering especially the EDF hydro electric bit.
We set off bimbling and come across this odd scene so pull in for coffee.

The roads get more and more interesting all the way to Sciltach, we had considered going up to Baden Baden and coming down the B500 but liked our route better as no motorway and just as interesting.

We arrive in Schiltach after lunch and find the Hotel straight away. We are greeted like long lost friends and shown the garage . Once unpacked we head out to explore this quaint little sleepy Town, it decides to rain but Mein Host gives us an umbrella, stops the moment we set off walking, result

We walked to tourist information and visit two small museums, the best been the History of the Pharmacy, medicines and potion making over 2 floors.

Peaceful,tranquil yet full of life

On our walk back we spot this lovely moped

Gorgeous and in use, seen a couple of times razzing or ting tinging around.

Once back at the Hotel its time for a

We book a table as we have noted that Michael the Patron is a published Chef. Sorry no pictures which is odd as Julie takes photos of all our food ha ha ha. Its probably to diary what I am eating.

Will certainly go back and spend more time around the area on excellent roads.

Off the Sindelfigen to visit our friend and family for 3 days more to follow

more please ...... :clap :clap :clap

Thought of you whilst planning this Ash. All relatively short days in the saddle, more time to spend at destination was our brief. We have done loads of trips where there have been some high mile days and you come back needing a holiday. The bimble and stop loads worked a treat for us. One of our best ever holidays

Cool journey

Hope you got to visit the memorial du Linge, it's amazing how well the German trenches are preserved and just how close the French ones were

Keep it coming :thumb2

Quick stop we are returning with more time at some stage in the near future

Cracking job there Andrew

Nearly lost the will to live when smugmug jumbled our phots up

Yep enjoying this,keep it coming

On its way chap

Great pics, I love the Vosges also, some good roads and views...

If I don't bore everyone rigid with my post will get round to the Harz Region and onto Paderborn:thumby:

Thanks for taking the time Andrew, now I've seen the two bikes I remember meeting you at the Old Smithy on my Africa Twin.
