Scotland - the far North and prices

I take it you went round, not over the high road.
Over the pass. Tight here and there but not overly. I could have driven the Fire Appliance over but would have needed the on coming traffic to move over in plenty of time.

A bit naughty. Glad you weren’t anywhere near me when I go over. You’d end up reversing a long long way :blast

Don’t know when they added the Motorhome bit I don’t remember it being there when we went over.
It’s a good few years ago now. Just trying to work it out I think it’s 20-21 years ago now. Bloody hell where did that time go?
I remember a truck was ahead of us, the LPG truck I think.

Job, when in May are you going ?
We’re going 10th May,
Coylet inn ( Dunoon) B &B £90
Kyle of lochalsh hotel B&B £120 single rooms
Riverside ( Ullapool ) B&B £95 , single rooms
It’s not cheap up there.

It’s been there since about 2015. I was behind a local transit van who made a convoy of Italians reverse back to the top car park. Good fun. The locals hate it when motor homes go over the top road. I’m lucky enough to have access to a family owned static van at Applecross.
One year we were walking outside of the campsite when a reccy truck brought an accident damaged one back down. Not a pleasant site.

Surely even in Scotland the Highway Code is used. As in those going uphill are given right of way? That’s how it’s done around here on the passing place roads. Unless of course it’s a logging truck!! They just keep going.

We were going uphill, about 600 metres from the view point on the bend at the top. The van made them all reverse, about 6 of them IIRC.

Just looking to book rooms for myself and 3 others for a trip in May upto to Ullapool - but have cast the net quite wide now because some of the accomodation prices are eye watering !
£150+ a night seems quite the norm regardless of whether its Ullapool, Inverness, Fort Bill etc.
Plenty of places are showing nigh on £200 a night :confused2:
And thats BNB, not even a smart hotel
Crackers!

Are you staying in one place, or moving along as you travel?

Plenty of lodges to rent in the area. That's what i've done in the past when going up to explore the place for a week or so.

This place was lovely and chilled out. Very quiet location, and small site - so barely any noise from other residents.

Idea was to stay in one place -
I’ve been and explored the area many, many times but not for a few years now - my 3 work friends have never been.

It’s a long ride on the Friday 15th to get there from Newcastle where they live, going up through the Lecht etc.
Plan was to stay 3 nights in Ullapool.
From there I can take them on a durness loop Saturday and an applecross
Loop Sunday.
Then up Monday morning for a full day ride home but down through glencoe etc back to Newcastle.
Whilst ullapool is quite north, I have always liked the place for a night out or two on the bike.
It takes effort to get there.
It’s a long way.
I find that rewarding.

I will continue on to Staffordshire and home but I’m a bit mad like that and will do 500miles in a day.
Besides, I’ve a new bike and BMW claim it’s the ultimate tourer
😉

Have found somewhere buts it’s £1800 for us all for the three nights.

It’s not very far from Newcastle to Ullapool. We’ve ridden Yorkshire to Inverness regularly. Going over Glenshee, the Lecht etc. They’ll be fine. We have used as Air B&B in Fort William for a few days one time. I don’t know if you’ve watched Fat Lad on a bike on YouTube but they use Parkdene resorts staying in large static caravans on their tours.

out of curiosity, I looked up the Scourie Hotel. I did the NC500 before it was a thing in a Pug 205 GTi and just landed there. c 1988. Fish out of water, it seemed to be retired Colonels with grandsons who were trout fishing. Looked like a gentleman's club or Oxford college.
Anyway, nearly 40 years later, it is nearly a grand to stay there 3 nights in May. They include breakfast for that.
Food was good, especially the fish course in the set menu. A fillet of trout served with almonds toasted in butter. One of the 2 best fish courses I have eaten. Just 4 ingredients if you include salt. No idea what is cost me, Access paid.

October is my favourite time up here. The light is best, shows up so much more. Fewer people and some places still open if you're lucky. It can be as nice as summer too.

The Coylet would be one of my regular stop offs heading North From Cairnryan. After the Gourock to Dunoon Ferry its a good place for lunch. They made a film there in 1994 "The blue boy" starring Emma Thompson and Adrian Dunbar. It was directed by Paul Murton who does the "Grand Tours" of Scotland documentary series for the BBC. I was "Touring" on the Anniversary R1 at the time before the NC500 and when the run from Ullapool to Rhiconich was a a playground for very fast bikes :D

I’ve been using the Riverside b&b in Ullapool for years. Always clean and warm with an excellent breakfast.single room around£95. Twin/double £140. You can book via the website. If staying in Ullapool booking a restaurant in advance is essential, look at trip advisor for your choice.Ive been using the Ceilidh Place. Have a good trip but as has been said, prices are high, more so on any of the islands but if your lucky with the weather it’s outstanding.

Go to N.Wales instead! Just booked a night in Bangor on Fri 5 June to see Richard Thompson at the University theatre. £58 inc breakfast.
In fairness Bangor is a bit of a sh*thole. I treated the lovely Sally to a meal out as we were camping at the bottom of Tryfan in Feb -5C. Pub we went in had the stuffing coming out of the seats - special.

oh, I wouldn't go there except for a gig. As it is a uni town, a bit of pre and post gig people watching might provide some visual stimulation.

camping, in Snowdonia, in Feb. You really know how to impress a lady.

Into the lumpy hinterland would be beneficial for the motorcyclist. We have pubs with beds, central heating and proper brown bitter beer

We have toured Scotland twice and the cost was eye wateringly expensive. It’s far cheaper to go to the continent where the coffee is much better.we enjoyed the trip but unlikely to return.

We find the prices for accommodation in the north of UK in general now just too expensive and that’s why we don’t get over as much on the bikes anymore.
Plus the ferry costs. Makes places like France and Germany simply much more economical. I do miss coming over with our group but some of the crew just can’t afford it any more

The coylet inn was in fact owned by Emma Thomson for a number of years. I was in there in November and had a good curry. 😁

Alright mate, have a think about Strathpeffer as a base, I've done a few trips from here, stayed at the Ben Wyvis Hotel, usually a good deal on dinner bed and breakfast. What bike have you got now? Thought you'd never let the old gs go !
