Thinking about a trip to Scotland in the middle of March with my son. Anybody got suggestions for routes, way-points, campsites, places of interest to visit etc.

A mapsource file would be nice. Planning to go up the west coast from Stranraer.

Cheers :)

hey there, first off, we're a deceptively big place, how many days are you planning to visit for. Are you coming on the bike, because March can still be a little chilly with high chance of rain (especially the west which gets it's fair share of the stuff)

As you're bringing your son, does he have any particular interests?

Bit more info....cheers.....:thumb

Here are three files covering three days of a weeks ride I did last year. I can heartily recommend these as they are, no changes needed. If you're tailoring, my simple advice would be keep in roads around the North West of Scotland (Ullapool, Loch Inver etc). IMHO the best biking roads in the UK, if not further afield too! PS, the hotel in the route in Loch Inver is recommended - great food and the view from the restaurant over the harbour is incredible - a great way to end a day's biking!

Not bringing the bike, bringing a new VW van, cos I figured on the chilly side. The son wants to camp, me, I'm going hmmmmm!:augie, hence the van or the odd hotel thrown in :D.

We are both into hiking and remote wild places and a few nice beers:beer: Oh! he's 18 by the way ! tall and has a particular interest in girls as well

I would head over to Skye as a minimum. For walking the Cullins are superbly majestic, for the ladies head to Portree (they speak with an amazing accent too). Then I would head up to Ullapool. I don't know about walking but its a good night in the pub up there:augie

Oh and by the way, leave your teant behind it will be Baltic in MArch;)

if you're heading up Ullapool way an you've got a good day, Stac pollaidh is a good walk. under an hour to get to the main ridge, add another couple to traverse the ridge, but it's an xlnt scramble. not for the faint hearted in bad weather. enjoy.:beerjug:

hey Andy, it's along the ridge on Stac Pollaidh, the guy holding on introduced himself as "kenny dalgleish, but not the footballer",the bit he's climbing is a sheer drop both sides:eek: my lad was only 15 at the time, but loved it:D
the first pic has Suilven in the background, scotland's "Sugar Loaf mountain".

Where's Kenny Dalgleish's backback with waterproofs and a bottle of water at least?

It's amazing how many folk you meet on mountains who have feck all with them if the weather suddenly closes in...:rob
