Hi Guys ,

I'm looking at doing my first Scottish trip early next year and would like to explore the Hebrides and Western Isles , does any one have any recommendations and routes they recommend and GPS routes and places to camp or stay , wilder the better including Bothies and any other hints or tips.

I'm looking for great scenery and dramatic landscapes , and also some good roads too :)

Also if any one else fancies accompanying a soft southerner :D , that would be cool

Thanks guys

Paul

Islay

Hi Pnewman,

We went up to Islay last September had a great time tasting whisky and beer :boozer We travelled up from th South. You can have routes and recommendations on demand.

There are only two campsites on islay We stayed at Kintra Farm which was OK. We also splashed out on two nights at the Port charlotte Hotel which was fantastic. If you let me know you want more info.

don't forget that you can save some money by buying a multitrip ticket from the ferry company. Try here

Have a great trip, but watch out for the Midges. :pullface

Regards,

Path.

There is a pilot scheme under way on calmac ferries called road equivalent tariff (RET).
This means there are big discounts on normal fares but discount doesn't apply to multi-trip tickets.
So, for the time being, you might be better off buying bog-standard singles or returns rather than 'hopscotch' tickets, as they call them.
Check the prices.
Note: you don't have to apply for the RET discount - it's built in.

Loads of campsites. Loads of good roads.
Hope you enjoy it.

Thanks AberdeenAngus,

Are you sure, Angus? I'm fairly sure that G.C. got a week long open ticket at half price for his summer hols. Of course, I might be totally wrong aboot that...:beerjug:

It'll be smashing if they are giving RET discounts to hopscotch tickets.
It would make sense, so perhaps they've done it at last.

Think my ticket cost just shy of £120. That was with a pillion.
Multi trip as Ronno says. I started at Oban and finished at Mallaig. Could just as easily finished at Ullapool but I wanted to come back through Skye.
The ticket was valid for a month from the first day I used it. Book all your ferries in advance would be my advice. May/July for the best weather without the Midgies if wildcamping.
Trip report here.
Nothing to see out there, and plenty of it :D
