Scottish Recommendations 2

Hello again

I previously posted about wanting to do a tour of Scotland while staying with friends in Aberdeen and Edinburgh... Well scrap that, I'm going to be selfish and do my own thing... latest Rough plan...

Day 1: Cairnryan to Fort William

Day 2: Fortwilliam, Mallain (Ferry), Loop of Skye and stay in Plockon.

Day 3: Plockton, over the pass to Applecross, Stay on the coast heading north, Up Gairloch direction hugging the coast again, and A835 to Inverness.

Day 4: Inverness, through Cairngorms and head back to ferry in Cairnryan.

Now, let me know what you think.

Should I leave off the loop of Skye and head further north to Ullapool and up to Suilvean etc...? obviously time and distance will be the only constraints.

I'd miss out Skye then you should easily be able to reach Ullapool on day two.
Day three head right up the coast towards Durness, across towards Tonge then follow the A836 down to Inverness.
Day four, you can go through the Cairngorms (Aviemore, Granton on Spey, The Lecht, Glenshee, Perth then A9) or from Aviemore take the old road towards Newtonmore, which will take you down the Laggan Road (without a doubt one of the best bits of road in the country) towards Spean Bridge and back to Fort William.

I would agree with the above but add, from the A839 take the B9176 which runs down to Evanton, great bit of road with some cracking viewpoints and miss out a boring bit of the A9.

Would also recommend the Premier Inn Riverside Inverness Central,reasonable price,covered parking,great location does get booked up quickly though.

if you pm me your email address i'll send you some garmin routes with all the top roads, personally i would do skye before the loop along the north coast but hey ho.

Yeah, I would also not miss out Skye , fantastic roads and scenery up north of the isle, Old man of Storr, Quirang , fairy pool etc etc
Feck itadd another couple of days and do the lot is my opinion

Good hotel in Kyle of lochash, Tingle Creek hotel, I can highly recommend it. Good place to tour Skye from

Another option would be head to Ullapool when you get to the A835 junction - a ten/twelve minute run to Ullapool. Overnight in Ullapool then pick up your homeward route via Inverness. It would add just over an hours riding on your last day.

I think an extra day is needed by the sounds of it... dont want to be under pressure at any stage and with a baby en route to my house in June I want to make the most of it... Ullapool it is, and then a loop north sounds good while not leaving out Skye.

How does that sound?

The Strathcarron hotel is a good place to stay
Skye is easy to do from there as is the pass of the cattle and the road in over the mountain is a hoot

Oh come on.....once you've done it a few times, yes. But if you've never done it - and the weather is kind, its a pretty nice bit of road.
I actually think the cost road up to Torridon is just as good, in its own way.

Ya I also think on the first time it should be good too... Like stelvio, the first time I did it one early morning it was class, but it was never really close any time after that.

A835 around Altguish inn and Loch Glascarnoch......love it.

Detour Fort William, Corran Ferry, Strontian. From there you can either take the forestry track from Polloch to Glenfinnan, 16 miles of gravel, or the Lochailort road to Mallaig. Don't miss Skye, you can take the ferry from Mallaig and come back by the bridge.
I bits of that in October as part of a longer run that took in Mull, Kilchoan and Ullapool, some fantastic roads and great scenery.

The road from the Corran Ferry to Strontian is a fantastic quiet picturesque road especially if you are off the ferry first. The campsite in Strontian is called Sunart Camping and is owned by my mate Tim and his wife Lynn. Tim is a keen biker who often shows other bikers around. If you don't fancy camping he has about 4 cedar cabins of various sizes at very reasonable prices per night.

You'll come down with info over load albeit well meaning,If you can I would consider adding an extra day, 2 if you can to ease the pressure on yourself
If you come down the A93 take the B950 thru to Kirkmicheal then drop down into Pitlochry join the A9 (S) and then follow the A827 to Aberfeldy pick a route via Crieff or Lochearnhead back towards Glasgow and the boat.

Is that a legal right of way? Bloody rare thing if it is.
