Have been looking at sorting out the topbox alloy panel as quite scratched and looking well used, which it has been. Got some "brushed steel" vynl and first attempt not to bad. Got enough to do about 3 boxes for a £10 so going to wait till weather warmer then redo it, this time clean it properly first so it sticks better in the folds :blast just to impatient and garage was a bit cool still, looks good I think.
Going to Williams for GS launch this Sat if any one fancies a look and also have the bike covers with me as well :thumb

That looks like a tidy job, and a good solution to battered Vario's.

Bet they'd look good in matt black though.

Did think that and the usual Carbon but as we have 2 bikes I need to get approval of any mods as have to do them to Sues bike as well:D and this was best option.

That looks really good.:thumb How easy is it to apply vinyl wrap, as I'm a DIY disaster, and am all fingers and thumbs?:comfort

Bit of plastic padding filler for a dent and vinyl cover on top and jobs a goodun on mine then ;)

Is that a seat pad or purse beneath the backrest on your box?

Not to bad as both edge covers unscrew really easy. Made the mistake of doing it in a "cool" garage. Going to retry as have loads left but this time will take the box in the kitchen and spend a bit more time cleaning the cover before staring it. A hair drier helps getting the corners etc right. If you search YouTube lots of demos on how to wrap everything from cars to dashboards. Very usefull.

Looks great. Does it sort of shrink fit with heat?
Where did you get it from?

Got the vynil from ebay added a link but loads on there a 600mm by 1250 mm piece will do two top boxes. I did use a hair drier tried a heat gun but to strong and made it to soft. When I redo it again will get a second pair of hands (the wife) or a mate, just makes it easier to handle. I did get some expensive 3M carbonfiber vynil and to be honest was much better product and easier to use put some on the car dash. If I could find a similar 3M product I would get that.

Thanks Robert...

Fantastic idea Ted

Only gone and bought myself one haven't I :D

Arrived today.... blimey that was quick!

Great idea, great product and great detailing..... to say I'm happy, is an understatement !!! :thumb

I once tried to do a van window (similar film product). Oh what a ****ing mess & how I laughed. :o

Buy enough to do 2 cases and expect to need another sheet to finish the job. Its not really hard to do but there's a knack and once the film gets creased its very hard to smooth it out.

BTW the same stuff on adventure cases would stop the straps from rubbing into the alloy surface.

Nice job, I thought I could buy a new alloy cover so I carefully removed the old, its only held on with silicon sealer. On the last tug it creased down the middle scrapping it. I then found it is not a spare component, the whole lid is required. Without the alloy the lid is very unfinished. Luckily I bought an all black lid from a GS800 off e-buy, it fitted on with no problems.
0/10 to BMW for not selling spare alloy trim panels. They would be very easy to fit and make the boxes look like new.

I've not seen a product like this in the flesh, so to speak so dose anybody know if this type of product could be used to be used cover body panels like the beak etc?

Google body wrapping. It's used on race cars or anyone wanting a new finish without losing the original paint.

Ok Version 2. Tried the Carbon Fiber look and worked really well but
Herself was not keen:blast so got some silver and think it looks good. Old stuff warmed up before removing and can use it on something else if I like.
Got some extra so going to try it on the alloy pannier lids next, may be hide the scuffs and boot marks. Oh used the Carbon I tried and removed on the two small plactic panels by the seat and they look good, match the Sargent seat.
