My starter motor screeches after I release the starter button if the bike fails to start. Can this be sorted or is it a sign of impending doom. The bike is a 1988 100 GS.

Not sure on the airheads but I had this on my 1100 and it's just a question of getting the starter motor out and cleaning off all the crud. I used brake cleaner on it and then regreased it and popped it back in. Don't be shy - you really need to disassemble it and get inside the casing to clean it well.

Did the same on my 1150 two weeks ago.

All came to bits fine but getting the split ring back inside the bush that retains all the gear on the shaft was a right pain in the arse.

No more screeching starter any more though :)

Dried out starter

Usually a sign of a long period of non use, just remove the starter cover, get some WD40 or Chain lube and squirt it onto the bearing on the dome shaped cover over the starter ring, careful not to overdo it or your clutch will slip!!!!!
Removal is simple, undo the two nuts & bolts visible at the domed shaped cover end after you have disconnected the battery & leads to the motor, Its really is a piece of pxxs. Reg

Thanks

Thanks for the information, I will add that to my list of jobs to do.

Don't be tempted to take the rear cover off in order to inspect the brushes . . The plastic brush holder is very brittle - I broke one trying to get the brushes back in as the retaining springs are strong and the whole assembly is loose until the cover is screwed back.

I am assuming its a Valeo starter - I can't comment on other types.

Bob.

Mine in bits before and after cleaning and before greasing.....
