Screen noise problems....

I have just bought a GS and am delighted with it apart from the screen. I cannot seem to adjust the standard screen to reduce the noise beyond what seems to be a gale. I have also put on tobinators and made 10's of adjustment trials.

My dealer let me try an Adventure to see if fitting this screen might help, and I used my own seat to ensure the height was the same but this didn't reduce the noise to acceptable levels although it was a little better.

Next try is one of the small deflectors that fit on the top of the standard windscreen and then either NN screen or Wunderlich.

Problem is without buying these there is no way of testing whether they work for me, so I guess there may be some parts coming up for sale soon.

Given the number of threads on this, it might be an idea to maintain a "pool" of items people can try to fix this issue...

yes. however for short rides i prefer not to. I dont need them on my other bike (Fazer 1000) as there is no turbulence.

There are tons of threads on screens.

Winglets helped me a little but I am probably a bit tall 6'1

Smaller guys seem to have less of a problem and if I duck it certainly is nice and quiet

Don't try the Touratech screen extender thingy that clamps to the top of the screen on a standard 1200GS screen as the screen is only supported at the bottom front and sides and will crack across the securing bolt holes and upwards midway between the securing bolts and adjusters - how do I know this you might ask - painful experience during a trip to valencia last summer.

At approx 80mph the screen cracked - fortunatly for me BMW replaced it under warranty as they had never seen a screen crack away from the mounting points (thats what they said!), I might have forgot to mention the screen extender.

Anyway it works fine on the adventure screen cos the guy that I sold it to has just done morocco at some stupid speeds with no problem, I guess this is because the adv screen has additional supports.

I have been looking at the Puig touring screen but have not yet convinced myself that it's worth the expense, any feedback on this screen would be much appreciated.

I could not get decent comfort from the standard screen either, with or without tobinators, and ended up with a Wunderlich screen. Don't rush out and buy the Adv screen - it is bloody expensive compared to other solutions. Do some research on here first and have a look at Nippy, Wunderlich, MRA etc.

Wind noise

Nobody seems to have the same result - a bit like tyre wear or petrol consumption! I never had a real problem witht the standard screen and the noise around 90 mph told me to watch out! However I did change it for the Adventure screen + winglets and there is very little noise or buffeting at 180 kph; which is as fast as I have dared so far! The extra support stiffens up the screen and provides an excellent mounting for the GPS. I useed it throughout the winter but as we had very little rain or cold weather was not really able to judge it from the protection point of view;
Yes, it is a bit pricey ( around 400€ all together) but it is a genuine BMW part and it looks right on the bike; (and when I come to trade it in I will get a better deal than with another type of screen.)

Trouble is, when people talk about 'noise' & 'buffeting' it's all very subjective. Consequently, it's impossible to compare other peoples' experiences.

For what it's worth, most riders that I have seen, like me, leave the screen fully forward. I know my dealer recommends this.

Secondly, your Fazer will seem quieter because it has no screen. Your helmet will be sitting in smooth, rather than turbulent, airflow. It's the turbulence from the screen that causes the buffeting and noise - try standing up as you're riding.

On RTs, LTs, Wings & Pans, you can duck behind the screen to sit in the quiet 'bubble' (although you'll end up with a cold back & neck). On the GS, this isn't practical - unless you're really short or malformed ;) I think you have to be realistic about what to expect.

Finally, many Tossers will talk about their height and what suits them in terms of screen position & height. You can always experiment by raising or lowering your upper body/head to see if an alternative set-up might be better.

Or, you could just ride the bike & not worry :thumb2

Long live Reynolds (number).

I use the winglets and the touratech extender thingy. Unlike Daffy I've had no problem even on the motorway at 90mph. I'm six foot and it works for me. Although on long motorway trips I also use earplugs.

I used a laminar lip which uses velcro pads to stick to the top of the screen. Takes away the buffeting and a lot of the wind noise.

But as someone said its depends on your height in the seat etc so its a matter of trial and error.

Panal,
Are you fitting the MRA to a 1200 that is an impressive result, im also looking at screens but for a 1150.

i got a wonderlich one for a 1150gs about £150 and that was a cracker see fast freddy he has it now

Panal,

Any reason you didn't choose the Wunderlich for the 1200?

thanks

i use a touratech deserto 3 screen fully adjustable and looks good

Screen stays fully down in winter to help clear visor in cr@p weather - very little buffeting and acceptable noise.

Screen comes off in the summer - bike looks better IMHO and no buffeting and virtually no noise.

6" tall and use a TourX with peak.

You do use ear plugs don't you?

TBH I don't see what the problem is with a bit of buffeting/noise - if it was such a priority I'd have got a full on tourer with a barn door front end (even then I suspect it wouldn't be 'perfect' :nenau )
