I've recently moved to a 1200 LC from a hexhead and I'm finding the wind noise pretty horrendous, so much so that I'm sure it's definitely going to affect my comms/nav setup when we get out 2-up in the better weather.
My old bike was a 2006 GS fitted with 1200 GSA screen/winglets plus an adjustable MRA wind deflector at the top of the screen. This setup reduced noise and buffeting to such an extent that I could determine that the main issue with my Shoei Neotec was noise coming from the vent on the very top, riding with it closed made a noticeable difference to the noise level! Added to that I could also easily ride at motorway speeds with the visor fully open.

On my new LC GS so far I've fitted just a GSA screen, the original smaller screen created a lot of wind noise and buffeting and the GSA screen quite honestly isn't any better, even doing basic shoulder checks results in a noticeable blast of wind pressure compared to the old setup. Helmet vents open or closed, visor open a little, it doesn't make any difference because the general turbulence and wind noise is just so bad, and I'm thinking long days on the bike are going to be substantially more fatiguing than with my old bike. I always wear earplugs.

So what options are there that might improve things? Do the Wunderlich wind deflectors (winglets) make any noticeable difference?
The GSA LC screen is a different material than the old GSA so I'm not keen to add a MRA deflector (which was a near-perfect match for the old GSA screen) and also I'm not keen on the Touratech extender with it's big ally target fixation block, so are there other alternatives available that will work better than the latest GSA screen?

Fella do you know if the screen is oscillating? (Aka wobbling like Fekk?) I’ve no idea if this will help but I designed and made some brackets that stopped this ‘wobble’ which ‘might’ have a bearing on your problem. Lots of the lads have bought the brackets so they do, at least, stop the wobble! Take a look on my site in the GSA LC section www.cymarcbikeparts.co.uk - if you are near you are welcome to try my GSA to see if the buffering is different, I’ve got the brackets fitted to mine. PM me if I can help or email on [email protected]

Hi Stu

I have the MRA Jobbie on my GSA screen. It needs a pair of Mark’s support brackets, but one adjusted I’m happy at licence losing speeds with visor up, and that’s on a high seat raised to highest level.

Had the same issues. Tried the GSA screen - didn't work for me as there was still too much noise. Wind deflector was much better, but made the screen bounce about too much. Ended up with the Puig touring screen (preferred the one piece look) which is pretty much perfect for my needs. Like Nin's bike it needs additional support, the only downside is that it is too effective at deflecting the wind as the ventilation on my Schubert is much less than with the std screen.

Much quieter too.

Yep - have to put my screen down to get any ventilation on my Schuberth!

Ditto exactly for me with same Puig screen and support. I'm 6'4" with a high seat option and bar risers sitting me well up and it works a treat for me.

Even if the brackets do not solve the problem, they will certainly be a good mod to your bike, if you add a taller screen later.

If it is the noise, then look at ear plugs. Playing around with the screen will only help with wind buffetting (if any).

The noise on a GS/GSA is more from the road/engine/tyre coming up the space around the steering column.

I fitted a pair of wunderlich deflectors to my 2017 GS LC to reduce chest buffering and was really quite disappointed. I would't invest the money again. In addition, the plastic seems to scratch quite easily.

It seems to me that the majority of buffering and noise comes from the space around the steering column, as kurienp has said. It's especially noticeable once the windshield has been raised about halfway onward. Didn't the old model used to have a shield there, like the gsa - not sure why they got rid of it. I'd look to do something is that direction first.

try the Givi 5108DT. I sit in a quiet bubble behind this screen. BUT, it takes away all the cooling air so on a hot day i get very warm.

I've just moved from a 2008 GS to 2017 that had a GIVI D5108B when I bought it. Have to say that the Givi Air Flow screen I had on the 2008 GS was amazing in terms of reducing buffeting and noise. The Givi on the LC GS seems pretty good so far - though more noise that the Air Flow. It's much better that the original GS screen which I didn't like at all. I do use fitted ear plugs so noise not much of an issue and the adjustment is good - in the lower position plenty of cooling air.

I have the MRA Vario screen which works great for me at 5'8". Really depends on your height though.

Also use the Wunderlich wind deflectors in our winter...equivalent of your summer :P :P :) ...and they only reduce the wind on the mid section. Don't remember them doing anything for noise levels.

The Puig touring screen is very quiet for shortarses like me (5’8.5”)

You have my sympathy because I've been through this process myself. I am 6' 1" and ride my GSA LC with the seat in the high position. Initially I tried the Puig screen which at that time was only available in tinted perspex although I see it is now available in clear perspex. The Puig screen did an excellent job of reducing noise and buffeting but it did too good a job of keeping the wind off in that in warmer weather I found myself wanting more ventilation. The other big issue I had with the Puig screen was that even in the lowest setting, I was looking through the top of the screen which was OK in dry weather but in wet weather the water droplets on the screen and spoiler reduced my visibility too much especially given the fact that the screen was tinted. So next I tried the MRA Vario screen and I found it was quite the opposite to the Puig, great in warm weather but not enough protection in cold weather. In desperation more than anything else, I decided to do what Nin did and take the spoiler off the MRA screen and screw onto the standard GSA screen. I played around with the position a bit and unlike Nin's screen, for me the best position was a bit lower and parallel to the GSA screen and that seems to suit me in all weathers. In fact it suits me so well I transferred the screen and spoiler to my new GSA which I took delivery of a few days ago. Yes I agree if you're going to mess around with bigger screens and/or spoilers you need the Cymarc supports. The GSA screen with MRA spoiler wobbles alarmingly without them

Having said all this, the very best screen I've had on a GS was the Givi Airflow which worked brilliantly for me on my old oilhead GS. I have no idea why Givi havent updated this screen to offer it for the GS LC

I've made my own AirFlow using Givi AirFlow spare parts and an aftermarket screen (like GSA screen but taller) as the base. This works really well for me. I am 6' 1" but with average legs and very long torso, so more like someone of 6' 3" with more normal proportions when seated.

I just fitted one of these at the weekend after quite a bit of googling and reading reviews - yet to get some miles on it given the appalling weather this week.

I'm 6ft 2in and have the Givi Highflow. Superb. I can ride on the motorway with the visor up and sunshield down. There's a bit of windnoise (After all, you are on a motorbike) but no buffetting. It's a bit hotter on warm days but the pros are better than the cons.

Thanks for all the replies, it seems that without a Givi AirFlow available for the LC there's lots of different ideas about solving the problem! I was very impressed with the MRA spoiler on my hexhead and I'm thinking it's the way to go with the LC, although it's a shame there's not a spoiler that will suit the style if the GSA LC screen better though, the MRA spoiler suited the GSA hexhead screen perfectly.

Interesting that the Wunderlich winglets have no effect, the winglets on my hexhead made quite a difference.

Mark, I'll put an order through for a pair of your brackets ... I can see I'm going to need them!
